January 1st Holy Day of Obligation

Our Parish Priest for some reason has decided to have Mass on December 31st instead of January 1st for “Mary, Mother of God” Holy Day of Obligation. I have, and have had plans for the 31st for 6 months now (I’m attending a wedding). Will I have to go to confession before I’m able to take the Holy Eucharist since I’m unable to attend on the 31st?

Most parishes I’ve ever gone to offer both a vigil mass (Dec. 31st) and mass on the holy day.

Talk to your priest about missing mass.

Your pastor can give you a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass if there is a reason you cannot go. Talk to him about it.

It’s difficult to get to Mass this time of year. For those of us who can’t just hop in our cars or walk a few blocks, it doesn’t always happen. Going to Mass four times in two weeks that tend to be busier than normal anyway is very difficult. I imagine January 1 is the most common Holy Day to miss- I don’t know very many people who even know it is one.
 
Wow. I did not realize that January 1st was a holy day of obligation. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. 👍
