Is your parish offering a mass of peace and justice? What else is entailed with a Day of Penance?

I know this is totally off topic but when I get reminded of the date of the legalization of abortion it always gives me chills. My husband and I met on that day. Interestingly we are both unplanned children. I’m adopted (bio-mom was an unwed young woman)and his mom was pregnant with him before she was married. He was born 2 years before abortion became legal and I one year.
It makes me think about all the unplanned children after Jan 22, 1973 that never got the chance that we did. It’s very chilling.

Thank you for telling your story; God bless you!

To answer the OP’s question, my seminary is celebrating the prescribed Mass for Peace and Justice with violet vesture, and all seminarians have been encouraged to take up a special penitential act for this day.

Had no idea it was happening or scheduled. I’ll check tomorrow when I go to the 11 AM mass (where us Candidates and the Catecumans get dismissed after the scripture readings.):o

I abstain on Mondays anyhow, and have been on a fast since 13 November, so maybe I can offer that up?

Update at 2 PM Pacific time, Sunday 21 January

No, but the sunday newsletter did mention the Week Of Prayer for Christian Unity. It runs annually from the Feast of Saint Peter (18 January) to the Conversion of Saint Paul (25 Janauary):o

It’s something which the bishops instituted recently and do every year now on Jan 22. Well, except last year when the 22nd fell on a Sunday so they transferred it to Monday.

Question: Would abstaining from meat on Monday be considered penance? It is on Fridays, after all. How about fasting?

Sure, either of those things would work. ultimately, it’s up to the individual to decide what’s best for them to offer. So if that’s what you’d like to do, go for it! (Or maybe went for it at this point).
