I was talking with a young girl who was interested in reading the whole Bible. I told her that there is this chronologically walk through the Bible that i would get for her.

I know that Jeff Cavins has it but she isn’t going to buy it. Does anyone have the books of the Bible that he suggests reading through to read chronologically?

Thank and God bless

his suggested reading plan for covering salvation history with the key books and chapters has been made freely available anytime he does a conference, it is in my files, and used to be on his website for the “old” salvation history bible study he did with Scott Hahn.

but there is also a reading plan for doing the same thing in many bibles as an appendix. The Catholic Youth Bible has several excellent reading plans, that would be a great gift for this girl.

I can give you a listing of the books that he recommends, though if you don’t have the workbook portions, it will do little good. The Great Adventure program ‘cracks open’ the Word so that is more easily understood. Simply reading the passages does not offer the meanings behind much of the storyline. The program is 24 weeks long and not including the homework we have, each session is two hours long.

Here is a website by Dr. Scott Hahn, et. al. that is an on-line study program and costs nothing. St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology

Jeff Cavins’ program is excellent, and it avoids many of the pitfalls associated with other reading plans, such as “reading through the bible in a year.” Regardless of whether any associated materials are purchased, this plan is certainly useful and would provide immense benefit to anyone who embarked upon it. In fact, by reading just three chapters per day, you can get through the entire bible narrative timeline in about three months.

For details on the 14 narrative books included in this plan, visit the following web-site:

jeffcavins.com/jc/?p=87

A short video is there and Jeff Cavins himself introduces the plan’s concept, and lists the 14 narrative books involved.

While attending an actual Great Adventure Timeline study program is best, there are several inexpensive tools that can be purchased at:

greatadventureonline.com/

The timeline chart itself is cheap and very useful. And, I can recommend the 8-week study set of CDs available for under $40. That set of CDs is broken up approximately into eight 30-45 minute lectures that cover 90+% of the main material discussed in the full 24-week course…I know, because I’ve participated in both versions.

I am still an active participant in ongoing Jeff Cavins’ studies, and I can’t recommend the program enough. It is very solid, and recently received an Imprimatur from the Catholic Church.

Sincerely,

You can also (for a lot less money) buy Scott Hahn’s “Our Father’s Plan” which goes through the Bible’s historical books.

They are:

Genesis (Job - Supplemental)
Exodus (Leviticus - Supplemental)
Numbers (Deuteronomy - Supplemental)
Joshua (Ruth - Supplemental for Joshue and Judges)
Judges
I and II Samuel (Psalms, 1 Chronicles, Proverbs, Song of Solomon - Supplemental)
I and II Kings (II Chronicles, Obadiah, Joel, Amos, Jonah, Hosea, Micah, Isaiah - Supplemental)
Ezra ( Haggai, Zechariah, Esther, Malachi - Supplemental for E and N).
Nehemiah
I Maccabees (II Maccabees, Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach - Supplemental)
Luke (Matthew, Mark, John - Supplemental)
Acts (Paul’s letters, other lettes, Revelation - Supplemental).

He suggests reading just the 14 books first, then read them again along with their Supplemental books.

Good Luck!!!

To get a fantastic overall grounding in the same subject I strongly recommend Scott Hahn’s “A Father Who Keeps His Promises: God’s Covenant Love In Scripture” before/during reading the 14 books. This is the book Hahn starts people out on in his online classes.

There are other books that offer commentaries on this subject (I’m reading “Salvation History” right now), but I think Cavins and Hahn are able to tie all these books together where you see them the way God intended you to - as one story of God’s plan of Salvation. The two have even combined to do an audio series on EWTN. If you go to their site and search their audio files (keyword “Cavins”), you’ll find the 13 part series. Well worth the time and the money (Free!!!).

I can’t say enough about the Great Adventure series. I have done the Bible Time line, Adventures in Matthew, and next year I am doing Acts of the Apostles. I have never been so excited to do these Bible studies!!!

I am in ll Kings, whoo hooo!!! This is a great study, it does help tremendously to DO the study though!!!

This is the same plan that makes up Jeff’s Timeline study. As pointed out in another reply, you’ll find quite a bit of collaboration between Scott Hahn and Jeff Cavins. In fact, Jeff wrote the related chapter in Scott’s book “Catholic for a Reason.”

The “Our Father’s Plan” series looks good, too. However, I doubt that anyone would really consider $40 too steep of an investment to make with respect to the central core meaning of our very existence. They’re both bargains…buy 'em both! 🙂
