Bible steve

I am amazed at how much you know…and yet you remain a JW.

As you can see from my posts I am losing respect for the watchtower organization…I don’t mean to…but they leave me no choice as they have embarrassed me terribly.

I trusted watchtower and could have been homless after going to bethel.
You are not ignorant of what happened, you may have bethelites in your city that were sent home (if they have a home).
You know watchtower has taught error and changed doctrines…you also know that the new world translation was done by people that did not have the best of qualifications.
You know that the watchtower canot be traced back to God in any way shape or form…no angel appeared and said God was favoring watchtower…no miricles no nothing but someone saying Jesus invisibly picked them( can you truly believe this)?
I don’t think that going door to door or getting persecuted automaticly makes something the true religion.

To be frank some remain jw’s because they enjoy giving talks and etc…they just like it. Others put to much work in to it to stop because they don’t want to be dissfellowshiped.
And trust me I would like to go back because I liked giving public talks and commenting, I can’t go back because of what they say about the HOLY SPIRIT…if they are wrong…and they usualy are…this is a terrible sin.

Bible steve I am not trying to judge you. But it is next to imposible for me to believe the watchtower.

How do you justify speaking against the Catholic church, when it is VERY possible that the catholic church is the true church?

search as I may…I CANOT find anything to justify the protestant rebelion against the church. As you know this will force me to become Catholic.

Hi excaliber,

I was kind of confused about your posts when I saw that your affiliation is JW, but the above post cleared things up!

I’m a cradle Catholic who didn’t really know my faith all that well until a former supervisor started asking me questions about it. That was around 10 yrs ago. So, I started researching and ended up listening to/reading conversion stories by Scott Hahn, Steve Ray, Tim Staples, Jimmy Akin, etc. Wow! Then the more I learned, the more I wanted to learn (hope that makes sense!). I now have a bookcase full of books and tapes/cds. And last year I took 2 Bible classes by Jeff Cavins on dvd (The Great Adventure series) that were offered at a local parish, and I can’t tell you how awesome that was! Before these classes, I had a hard time reading/understanding the OT, but now I see how the OId and New Testaments really complement each other.

I never doubted my faith before, but after everything I’ve learned during the past 10 yrs, I’m totally convinced that the Catholic church is the Church Jesus built on Peter approx 2000 yrs ago.

God bless you in your search! :gopray2:

To clear things up, technicaly I am still Jw only because I couldn’t start rcia on time. I think the difference is that you chose to educate yourself. While jw’s have no such choice because there church is not a place of worship but a school to study watchtower publications, and to aproach people door to door who are many times not prepared or have next to no knowledge…those that are knowledgeable about us will probably get listed as a waste of time.

You can trace your roots to Christ.
You have miricles and everything even the hope of a new heaven and new earth which dose not seem to be separated.YOU GOT IT ALL.

What do I got? I am playing with monkeys FOREVER! Because watchtower takes 144,000 literal.
I have a bible translated by people
who would not reveal themselves (probably because they had poor qualifications).
I got an Organization that could not be trusted in the past, and recently has proven it could not be trusted even now to this day.Not one person in Watchtower could perform a miricle, No visible angel has ever been seen anywhere near a kingdom hall.
I GOT NOTHING!

The truth here excaliber is that you’re not a JW any more. If you believe what the Church teaches, you’re Catholic by desire. it doesn’t matter if you didn’t have enough time to enroll in RCIA, there’s always next time. In the mean time you could gain more knowledge and go to Mass. You can speak to priests, get a spiritual advisor. In fact, have you asked a priest to maybe be your private RCIA instructor??? If you have had trouble joining RCIA because you don’t want your family to find out, this could be better, I don’t know… some priests can refuse to be a private instructor, but some will do it. It all depends on the diocese.

Or if you find someone who can be your CCD teacher, seriously, tere are ways if you really want it, but for that you’d need a speacial permission. Unless you want to wait until next fall, then that’s also ok. just because you aren’t baptized, it doesn’t mean you’re not Catholic. You believe, so that makes you more Catholic than many who have already been confirmed. Sadly, you cannot receive the Eucahrist until you’re fully initiated, but you can receive a “spiritual” communion which means that you really desire it in your heart.

Speak to a priest, see what he says…

Best of luck becoming a fully initiated Catholic. Don’t I wish my DH would actually think the way you do…

Wow you mean I can be considerd Catholic because of my desire.
That’s good because I was woundering How God viewed me…
Because I was baptized jw but I don’t believe a bit of it, and I am not baptized Catholic but I believe everything the church teaches.

YIKES!!! if God views me as a Catholic I had better behave myself…I gess Im not on vacation until Rcia starts again…GREAT GOOGLEY MOOGLEY!!!

I would not mind having rcia one on one with a priest. I will try it.

That last post lifted my spirits, because I did not even know if I was a real christian…Its possible
watchtower did not baptize me correctly.
Thanks for that post.

Wow you mean I can be considerd Catholic because of my desire.
Absolutely! 🙂

Hope you can get into RCIA or something as soon as possible. Just let the priest know where you stand, what you need, etc.

no the Watchtower did not baptize you correctly. Talk to a priest about baptism…most will have you wait and do it when you come into the Church at the same time as Confirmation, but if you ask, the priest might go ahead and baptize you now if it is a big concern of yours. My priest baptized my sister. If you might have trouble at home it could make a difference and he might do it for you without RCIA.

Welcome Home.

I would love to do it…it would be a little scary to be a baptized Catholic, and not know any of the call and responses and stuff.

I wounder if that would be ok?

You are Catholic at heart, and you are totally right about the Reformation (Or the Seperation, as I call it) being unjustified. You are on the RIGHT path. Believe me, I am not institutionally a Catholic at this time, but I am a Catholic-at-heart, just like you, buddy. I am in RCIA.

After you go through RCIA, you will have to be baptized (not re-baptized, since the Watchtower ritual is incorrect and not really baptism) and confirmed. You are a Catholic-at-heart. I was raised a fundamentalist Protestant, and now I’m coming Home, to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, founded by God Himself! Blessings to you, in the Name of the Father, the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Just to emphasise how ill-informed you are…

Rutherford died in 1942…

The New World Translation translation project was initiated in 1946 and was released incrementally beginning in the 1950’s.

It was finally released under one cover in 1961.

Simply amazing how Rutherford was taking liberties with the translation, huh?

But, that doesn’t matter to you right?

You couldn’t be wrong… it’s just couldn’t be… even with your facts in disarray…

I would be embarrased to be making such derogatory statements against another group and have my facts so incorrect.
Hi Steve,

Who made the New World Translation? Did whoever did it know Greek? That is the point. For anybody who knew no Greek, making a translation of at least the New Testaments in 4 years was a miracle to me. Did your translator claimed that he/she was under guidance from Arch-Angel Gabriel or any divine being? Why don’t you announce the name of the translator(s), so we can check the credibility. Otherwise, it will just sound like an illiterate person able to pass down a holy book to me.

Dear Excaliber,

If you do mean what you say, you must believe also that Jesus said “You will be with me in Paradise, today…” (not tomorrow, not next week, not next year). Since you are a healthy person, you must seek for baptism, brother.

It is one of those secrets everyone knows—Fred Franz was the New World Translation Committee. He had no qualifications except those in his own mind. But most JWs will not admit they know he did it even if they do.

Which is good news, about the baptism… Why? It means that at your valid Catholic baptism, my brother, all bets are off, all sins are wiped clean, and you will come out washed cleaner than clean!

Start calling around to some parishes to see if you could do one on one instruction. It may not be the norm where you live, but it is doable. Greek Catholic parishes are known for this (that’s what I am) and some old time priests still prefer one on one instruction before conversion (friend of mine who had been a fundamentalist, then bhuddist, then Episcopalian, then Pentecostal did one-on-one with a Dominican who taught at the local seminary because the friend worked nights (when RCIA classes were)… They spent a few months “wrestling it out” and now this guy could teach 90% of American cradle Catholics new things.

So pray about it and then call around. If you want, PM me and I would be pleased to offer some hints and suggestions for your consideration.

Welcome home!

go to eBay and get yourself a child’s First Communion Missal. I still use mine during Mass–large print and simple responses (for the few responses we sometimes do in Latin there is enough room to write it between lines or in the margins…) cost me $5. I did not learn how to repsond to the mass in RCIA–not sure if I was supposed to or not, but the best way is to just go to Mass and watch everyone else. Catch Mass online at St. Ann’s Media (google it) or watch it on EWTN on tv. You’ll pick it up quickly. Think of it as a play and learn your lines.

Thanks I will call some churches tomorrow and I will tell you if they
will let me do one on one instruction.

Here’s a little extract from this CA article. Interesting.
The New World Translation (NWT), the JWs’ own Bible version, was created between 1950-61 in several parts, beginning with New Testament (NT). The translation was made by an “anonymous” committee, which transliterated and altered passages that were problematic for earlier JWs. Nathan Knorr, Fred Franz, Albert Schroeder, George Gangas, and Milton Henschel were later identified as the men that created the text, which is used by no other sect. Franz studied non-biblical Greek for two years, and taught himself Hebrew. The rest had no formal training in any biblical language. The text of the NWT is more of a transliteration to fit theological presumptions than it is a true translation. This can be seen in key verses that the WTS changed in order to fit its doctrines.

To undermine the divinity of Christ in John 1:1, the NWT reads, " . . . the word was a god." Non-JW Greek scholars call this “a shocking mistranslation,” “incorrect,” “monstrous,” and “evidence of abysmal ignorance of the basic tenets of Greek grammar.” Furthermore, Col. 1:15-17 has been changed to “… by means of him all [other] things were created.” If the text were left as the original Greek reads, it would clearly state that Jesus created all things. However, the WTS cannot afford to say that anyone but Jehovah created all things, so it inserted the word “other” four times into the text.

The 1950, 1961, and 1970 editions of the NWT said that Jesus was to be worshipped (Heb. 1:6), but the WTS changed the NWT so that later editions would support its doctrines. The translators now decided to render the Greek word for “worship” (proskuneo) as “do obeisance” every time it is applied to Jesus, but as “worship” when modifying Jehovah. If the translators were consistent, then Jesus would be given the worship due to God in Matthew. 14:33, 28:9, 28:17, Luke 24:52, John 9:38, and Hebrews 1:6.

At the time of the Last Supper, there were over three dozen Aramaic words to say “this means,” “represents,” or “signifies,” but Jesus used none of them in his statement, “This is my body.” Since the WTS denies the Catholic teaching on the Eucharist, they have taken the liberty to change our Lord’s words to “This means my body” in Matthew 26:26.

The NWT also translates the Greek word kurios (“Lord”) as “Jehovah” dozens of times in the NT, despite the fact that the word “Jehovah” is never used by any NT author. It should also be asked why the NWT does not translate kurios as “Jehovah” in Romans 10:9, 1 Corinthians 12:3, Philippians 2:11, 2 Thessalonians 2:1, and Revelation 22:21. If it did translate kyrios consistently, then Jesus would be Jehovah!
Peace in Christ,

DustinsDad

Thanks I will call some churches tomorrow and I will tell you if they
will let me do one on one instruction.
Please, if a priest says no, don’t let it get you down, call another parish and ask another priest. Some priests don’t like to do this, but some would LOVE to help you. Please, do not be angry if one says no… pray for him and get yourself to another priest. I’m really glad I was of some help with my last post. I wish you the best of luck!!! 👍

Well, I learned something today from the dead baby resurrection story…I think there’s a general misunderstanding that JW’s don’t believe in resurrection, and that the 144,000 will only be drawn from living JW’s. In fact, there’s a saying around here, “as hopeless as a dead JW.” One of those colorful Appalachian idioms.

One of my college students was a JW and she attacked the faith of a 13 year old girl, the daughter of a math professor on our campus. The girl was homeschooled and was studying in the library and this JW adult woman in her 40s comes in and starts attacking her faith. With no permission from the girl’s mother to discuss religion with the girl. I had to talk to the girl to calm her down and explain what the JWs believe and how they’re different from most Christians. Unbelievable. It’s tactics like that, that makes me lose any sort of respect for JW’s.

I’m always bummed when I find a tract in my doorknob, and they’ve missed me again. I am dying to show them my rosary and scapular collection and my statues of OL of Mt Carmel and the Rosa Mystica and OL of the Smile (which St Therese of Lisieux had her vision in front of and was healed from the life-threatening fever), and St Michael slaying the dragon, and the Divino Nino boy Jesus offering his heart in his hand…so many treasures to share. heh heh heh

So, I have a question about the 144,000 JWs who will be saved and live forever on earth. Which 144,000? There’s a lot of JW’s who are going to be left out. How does a JW know they’re one of the 144k? Seems like a bad bet.

no, JWs believe the 144,000 are the ones who will go to heaven and rule with Jesus for the millennium (afterwards who knows?) OVER the earth. JWs believe everyone who ever died–except for the truly evil–will be resurrected to human life again on earth and after a final test at the end of the 1000 years will live forever on earth in paradise. The limits are on those who go to heaven being only 144,000—taken from Revelation chapter 7 and chapter 14.

Thanks for the clarification, Ravyn. BibleSteve also sent me a PM with a detailed description of the beliefs about this issue. I’ve learned something today, and if I hear that idiom again, I’m in a better position to refute it. Not like I’m becoming a JW but I think we should be fair to others in their beliefs.
