Jehovah’s Witness husband allegedly wages holy war on Catholic wife

RACINE — A man allegedly threatened to injure and kill his wife after an all-day argument over religion.

The man, 30, is charged with substantial battery, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, false imprisonment and intimidating a witness. If convicted, he could face up to $40,000 in fines and 35 years imprisonment. The Journal Times is not naming the man to protect the identity of his wife and daughter.

According to court records:

Officers were sent to a 21st Street home at 8:23 p.m. Jan. 13, where they found the victim visibly upset and shaken. She said she and her husband had been arguing all day, since she refused to go to a Jehovah’s Witness meeting that morning.

The woman said her husband is a Jehovah’s Witness while she is Catholic. She said he felt she should practice the same religion he does, and that she was lying to their daughter by allowing her to celebrate holidays like Christmas and Easter.

Starting that evening, the woman said their fight escalated. She said her husband has martial arts experience and has told her that he could “punch through steel if he wanted to.”

She said her husband strangled her until she blacked out, held a knife to her throat and threatened to cut her hand off and to kill her.

At one point, the woman said her husband handed her the phone and pushed 9-1, telling her to push the last number to see what would happen. When she pushed the final 1, her husband threw the phone, breaking it apart. She was once able to run out the front door, but her husband caught her and dragged her back inside.

Eventually, the woman said her husband got some alcohol from the refrigerator and told her he was going to get drunk and jump in Lake Michigan before driving away. Once the woman knew he was gone she grabbed her daughter and went to a neighbor’s house to call police.

I can tell you how it is handled EVERY DAY at Kingdom Halls all over the world—the husband is counselled not to get rough with his wife and to exercise his spiritual headship and encouraged to get his daughter away from his wife, with legal help set up for custody battles by the Watchtower! The only reason this husband MAY be disfellowshipped is because he allowed it to go public and now it is a scandal and will reflect badly on the congregation. I lived it for 34 years, I know what I am talking about. Do not ever let your tenderhearts put your guard down when it comes to this dangerous cult!

So since this is a compare and contrast category–what WOULD be done if this was the other way around? How would Catholics handle this?

Never! But the Church would handle it quietly. The man would not be excommunicated, but I suspect he would be given a pretty weighty penance, presuming he had a decent priest. In general, however, the Church would handle this quietly and privately.

so you are saying then that the Catholic Church—not a priest in Confession, but say Catholic Social Serices—would not put a violent abuser in jail? Hmmm. Maybe I am still in the wrong place!

First I neither said nor implied this.

Second, this occurred in the United States, the State of Wisconsin and the city of Racine. The Catholic Church does not put anyone in jail. Neither do the Jehovah’s Witnesses. That is what the police and courts are for. Seems to me the Racine authorities appear to be doing their job in this case.

I do not understand how you connect this to Catholic social service organizations. Or are you just trying to annoy people?

you are not understanding me. As a former JW who has seen the seedy underbelly of the Watchtower personally (in over 20 states of the US and for three generations) I am saying that as JWs go the ONLY reason this man is being dealt with properly is because the wife took it public when she ran to the neighbors to call the police.
I have personally been in situations where the victim was kept in the house until the bruises healed and it is over someone’s dead body (RIP Tammy Frasier Schultz 1969-1995) that the authorities are alerted.
I cannot believe the Catholic Church or any other church that I know of -for that matter- would allow a situation of abuse to exist.
People do not understand the cult nature of JWs. How likely is it that this was the first time this ever happened in that household?

Okay, now I understand your question.

What you mean is if the religions of the people were reversed (abuser: Catholic, wife: JW) and the police were not called, what would happen?

Well if all the guy did was go to confession, I believe the priest would probably encourage him to turn himself in. I know heard stories of people where a priest refused to grant them absolution until they turned themself in to the police and confessed the crime. I would hope a priest would do that. However, unless the family goes to a Catholic social service agency, how will they or anyone else know such a horrendous thing even happened?

Alternately, if there were no reversal of religions (abuser: JW, wife: Catholic) but rather the wife went to some Catholic service agency (e.g. battered women’s shelter), I think you can bet your bippy that the people there (Catholics) would have a hot-line to the police and help and support this woman in pressing charges. And it would absolutely zero difference to them what the religion of any of the people involved is. More likely than not, they Catholic service agency would not even ask (except to offer the services of a priest).

read my last post. JWs hide it. They don’t tell the police. I personally was threatened with death if I told about abuse. All I am saying is that people need to be aware of how JWs handle this, in contrast to how other religions handle it. And I am not talking about SOME JWs, especially nasty individuals–I am talking about them as a group. My friend was murdered and JWs made sure her husband got the kids! (She died of a heart condition brought on by repeated trauma–she had been beaten her whole life, first by her father and brother then by her husband and she was counselled to go home and stop making him hit her by the elders!)
Just pray for the family. This is how JWs would treat any Catholic if they thought they could get away with it.

My answer in simple. Forget the court of law. I would rather ask the husband to punch through steel with both hands and his heads if he wants to. Who knows that the JW’s God would help him.

BTW, how long the husband practicing in the Shao Lin Temple? He did get some alcohol, did he not? Yeah, I know. He is about to demonstrate the “Drunken Fist”. Wow, I would see another Jackie Chan.
