A better topic is that of authority. Where do Jehovah’s Witnesses get their authority to speak on God’s behalf?

I think this is true, as we know, the Pope speaks on God’s behalf because he has vision form the Holy spirit, the Pope is therefore infallible and has the authority to speak on God’s behalf and even declare when parts of the bible are no longer of use and make new holy proclamations.

It would be better to stick with these facts when speaking to Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Also it is a well known fact that Jehovah’s Witnesses when they preach refuse to even touch another bible and when you try and say “can I read the verse in my own personal copy of the bible” they say “NO! don’t go inside and get your own bible … we will leave if you try” this proves that they cannot defend what they say using the true Cathoic bibe.

I don’t think the above statement is true. I study with a JW and she will use her NWT and also the NAB.

This is so true, the Jehovahs say Jesus is God’s son and not (as we know) God Almighty himself. They say he was in heaven and that he is “A god” obviously someone that is “a god” is not divine! They are wrong, Jesus is not “a” god he is ALMIGHTY GOD THE CREATOR OF ALL THINGS AND THE FATHER OF JESUS as well as Jesus himself and the holy spirit. This is the holy trinity which is in the bible.

AGAIN they are wrong, Jesus taught us to pray to him in the model pray (Our father who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name) Since Jesus and the Father are one, Jesus is teaching us to pray to him. It’s clear in scripture Jesus said, Pray to me! As for images of course these are what we use to remind us that we are praying to Jesus/ God we kneel before an image of the Blessed Mary and pray to her, in the bible Mary communicated with the disciples thus prooving that she would be the mediator of our prayers.

The bible even says we should pray on behalf of each other, proving we can pray to any saint. Jesus taught us to address our prayers to the holy saints, Mary and to himself, this is what the holy bible teaches.

I continue to dialog with the JW. We discussed the 1914 date and I said I have a problem with anyone setting a date. It reminds me of apocalyptic cults. I told him how deuteronomy says god puts words in prophets mouths and they have to come true or they are not of god. I also said that no one knows of the return of christ and when he does return all will see him even those who pierced him. He got silent then. He is very good at scripture but he is astounded when I say my understanding, he just shakes his head. He will not read any literature I show him or go to any links I give him. He will listen to everything I say. He does go to the computer and look at the NAB bible for comparison. He will not let me show him anything out of a bible in hand.

Nevertheless, there are far, far worse ways to live in this world than the way they do and so I have a certain admiration for them.

As others have noted, the JW cult suppresses the divinity of Jesus Christ and his divine role in salvation. Jesus said that no one comes to the Father except through him [Jesus]. I can think of no worse way to live and die than not believing in the divinity of Jesus Christ and his divine role in salvation. Personally I have no admiration for paths to Hell.

Hello I was born and raised JW, and as Rolltide said it took years for me to understand
The Catholic position.

Jehovahs witnesses are very good people and realy think they have The Truth.
The problem is that Jehovahs witnesses have been taught that all other religions are inspired by satan to mislead people, because of this they won’t trust any other bible or books and they will NOT have an open mind for fear of being tricked by the devil.

My advise is to make sure they understand WHY Catholics claim to be The Church.
Many don’t know about apostolic succesion or how old The Catholic Church is…
This will suprise many that were born and raised Jehovahs witnesses.

After showing them FACTS proving apostolic succesion, explain to them what the Eucharist is as most will have NO IDEA, be SURE to show them scripture proving the real presence.
Ask to use the king james version because most Jehovahs witnesses won’t mind using it.

Next it is important to show them scripture where Christ gives athority to forgive sins
This will be shocking because they never realy thought of those scriptures that way.
Show scripture where many leave Christ because of his teachings on eating his flesh and drinking his blood.

Get into a pattern of showing scripture and then how that scripture is practiced in the church. If you do this, no Jehovahs witness that is realy seeking God can ignore scriptures
That Jehovahs Witnesses CLEARLY don’t obey, there christian consience will force them to
Keep studying untill they are sure they are where God wants them to be. If they stay on the path of humbly seeking truth…they WILL have to leave the watchtower ( after years of study and deprograming)

DO NOT debate the Trinity first, because it is an immediate turn of to them and is one of the MOST difficult things for them to grasp.
DO NOT debate praying to saints first again immediate turn of, if a Jehovahs witness sees you praying in front of statues it will LOOK LIKE you are directly involved with satanic practice and WILL scare them. This is not as funny as some Catholics think because they will
More then likely never consider the Catholic faith again it could stumble them so much.

You can bring up failed predictions, one of the most recent is THE GENERATION OF 1914
Change. They taught for many years that Armegedon would come before the generation of 1914 passed away…well people of the age of reason living during 1914 are getting very old
And the Watchtower organization is trying to change this without people directing much attention to it.

You know they are good people…I have a friend that is one, but I just accept her as she is and leave her to God

I know she won’t change, but she is kind, and honest ,and sincerely loves God, and is trying to live out her faith as she feels God is calling her to do

Sounds like you are doing a good job of responding sincerely and intelligently to him. Keep up the good work!



I once carried on a conversation with a Jehovah’s Witness for more than a year. Nelsa was her name. She kept bringing new people with her each time, who were younger than she was. I suppose they were JWs in training. Perhaps she was either trying to use me to teach them how to deal with tough questions, or she was secretly wanting to hear more of what I believed and why I believed. If I could have done one thing differently, I would have asked more questions and listened twice as much as I talked. But I was younger then, and into debate.

I’d suggest asking him questions, and tell him you don’t mind him quoting from his Bible–the New World Translation. Keep in mind that some of the text has been changed to make it easier to agree with their beliefs. And try to keep it friendly and respectful.

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

That is not correct. I have friends who take a KJT with them in their preaching work! I gave a talk tonight at a JW meeting on “hell” and only used a KJT.
We use what ever translation people prefer.

Our teaching publication “Reasoning from the Scriptures” encourages us to ask the householder to fetch their Bible and compare it to what we are saying.
