I am having a friendly dialogue with a Jehovahs witness. I am wondering if anyone has had any success in getting one to become catholic or to have them accept our view on scripture. As most know they have butchered the scriptures. He believes that his NWT is the best interpretation. I told him that the NWT is based on a translation from The Greek New Testament. I don’t know what is his source book? I told him that the Greek Orthodox church has not translated their bible from greek and it is understood and explained as the Roman Catholic church sees it, there is no translational difference? We (Catholics) did go from the Greek to the Latin then to english, but the understanding and translation is not different, right? Any help with this would be appreciated.

I am obviously not Catholic and not a Jehovah’s Witness either, but I have had many discussions with JW. You may want to avoid the “whose translation is more correct question” which is a conversational black hole. A better topic is that of authority. Where do Jehovah’s Witnesses get their authority to speak on God’s behalf? The original translations they claim to have for the Bible were originally compiled by… the Catholics. Their organization is a break-off of evangelicals who broke from protestants who broke from… the Catholics. So where does their authority come from?

Their doctrine also suppresses the divinity of Jesus Christ and his divine role in our salvation. That is not acceptable for me. What a corruption of holy scripture!!

Anyway, I am not trying to help you convert a JW to be Catholic, but hopefully now you can have a more meaningful discussion. Hope that helps.

I am no expert on the Jehovah’s, but I can tell you this. Here in Australia they are very active. I have had lots of then knock on my door and most times I let them in for a friendly chat. Many of them, but certainly not all, are young Americans out here doing a year of missionary work. All mof them and all of the locals who accompany them, are very fine young people, who are always very polite, very well dressed and quite reasonable. I enjoy debating with them and even if I deliberately become a little contrary with them, they retain their composure. I let them know that I’m Catholic and that they have a snowflake’s chance in hell of converting me, but we still have some interesting talks and all done with good humour. They certainly know their stuff. I find they follow the Bible very literally. Nevertheless, there are far, far worse ways to live in this world than the way they do and so I have a certain admiration for them. i even enjoy reading the Watchtower. I just wish more and more Catholics would stand up for their beliefs as do the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

For nearly two years, I have been discussing with a nice JW lady over interpretation of biblical passages (we started with the divinity of Jesus Christ) and differences between JW and Catholic teachings. The divide is huge! In the beginning this lady seemed to have the upper hand during our sessions, armed with her Emphatic Diaglott and Kingdom Interlinear translator (pushed by the Watchtower of course). She used and freely provided attractively printed publications, e.g., What the Bible Really Teaches, and their periodic Awaken and Watchtower magazines. After I beefed up on the issue(s) involving a lot of effort and hours (including good research and pointers from CAF!), I have become more confident in discussing with said lady. I cross-checked NWT verses with those from KJV and Douay Rheims, keeping in mind the context of the passages. It is clear, as I pointed out to her, that the bible version used and touted by JWs as the “true” translation, contain multiple verses their translators changed to suit their theology. Never mind that NWT was only published in 1961 by translators who do not have solid Greek language credentials, offering no more than wooden literalism. Of course, JWs are bolstered by the praise Professor Jason Beduhn bestowed on their NWT version, even if his is a minority opinion among biblical scholars.

I know of no one personally who converted from Jehovahs to Catholic, but there is an organization of Catholics who were former Jehovahs Witnesses (see www.catholicxjw.com). It seems that the more I read up on their organization, the more I feel that that the zeal of JWS including this lady, with whom I have discussions, deserves a better cause.

Indeed it is troubling that the faithful and aggressive door to door work/hours logged by current JWs result in big bumps in their new membership (it is now upwards of 7 million worldwide), mostly getting their converts from the Catholic and Protestant camps that are, you guessed it, not versed with the bible and not grounded in their faith. But Watchtower has lost scores from its own through the years, including JW elders, Pioneers, Bethelites, including a high ranking Governing Body member, Raymond Franz. The light did get brighter for them!

I hope sharing this helps with questions in the OP.

Among my prayers is a novena to St. Paul, the great Church doctor to the Gentiles and Apostle of conversion, to help enlighten my lady JW friend.

Blessings

Online I have seen a bible published by the Watchtower that tries to show what the Hebrew equivalent would be for the New Testament, and a few times it calls Jesus “YHWH” which is unusual since the Jehovah Witness deny His divinity.

One verse I’ve noticed Jehovah Witnesses fumble on explaining, as well as others that deny Jesus is God is:
And they went on casting stones at Stephen as he made appeal and said: “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then, bending his knees, he cried out with a strong voice: “Jehovah, do not charge this sin against them.” And after saying this he fell asleep [in death].–Acts 7:59-60 New World Translation
St Stephen is clearly praying to Jesus, some older JW translations even note it can be an invocation, however the official JW website says “Jesus made no room whatsoever for praying to some other person, image, “saint,” or even to him

With Jehovah as MY Witness, I wish you a Merry Christmas!

I have a friend that is a JW and I have known him now for almost ten years. The first three years were constant dialogue until he finally realized that I was set in stone. Oh, but what a journey that took me on towards looking at my own faith. We went the entire route that you mentioned and, as you know, much more. There is not just a scriptural motive for them but a deep planted psychological manipulation that goes beyond what you can do from the bible.

They are taught that all of “Christendom” originated from satan and only their organization is from God (Jehovah). So when you are talking with them they are tuning you out since they know that what you say is from satan. They are taught that the Trinity is a man made invention influenced by satan to take away full worship to the one true Jehovah. They are taught to throw away and dismiss any literature that you give them. They are encapsulated in their own little world and anything “worldly” is from satan and is to be avoided.

They are an apocalyptic group whose main focus is on the end of time. They are taught that if they follow Jehovah’s ways they will survive Armegeddon and live forever on a paradise earth. All those who are not of this group (goats) will be annihilated during this battle. There is great fear instilled in these folks and the consequenses are sever if they should falter.

If one were to leave the JW’s they would be disfellowshipped and most likely lose all contact with their family and friends. When a JW is disfellowshipped they are literally non-existent to those other JW’s around them. It is a very scary place to be.

Never, ever give up. God is in charge and only He causes conversions. We are His instruments and so we must continue living and spreading the gospel. Most of this was to the OP and others but I just wanted you to know that I can appreciate everything that you have done as I know how challenging it can be.

God bless you… teachccd 🙂

Thank you, BerhaneSelassie!

I plan to offer the additional proof text you provided that Jesus is Jehovah to my JW friend and see how she responds to it. The NWT indeed has “Jehovah” in place of the “Lord” in Acts 7:60, with St. Stephen calling on Lord Jesus in the preceding verse. Every place in the NWT showing exegetic inconsistency (or incompetence?) of the Watchtower translators should make these ardent Witnesses pause.

I love your clever closing greeting! Merry Christmas to you as well.

First, the JWs do zero charitable work. That is not of God. Their bible was translated by laymen, only one of whom had any knowledge of Greek, and was not a Greek linguist. They have added to scripture, making Jesus “a god”. I heartily suggest that you obtain a copy of The Essential Catholic Survival Guide, which was assembled by Catholic Answers apologists. Among many other things, it explains the errors in JW foundation and doctrine. It is an invaluable source of information regarding your faith and how to defend it.

Christ’s peace.

About two years ago, while on Catholic Community Forums, I met a Jehovah’s Witness who came to the boards asking LOTS of questions. He was still trying to proselytize, but there were definite cracks in his faith due to experiences he had actually working for the Watchtower organization in Brooklyn. After more than a year and a half of debate on those forums, he finally decided to take the plunge and become Catholic. He now posts here under the name Excaliber. I’ll see if I can message him and have him respond to this thread, since he’d bring a very unique, firsthand perspective to the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

BTW… I can tell you right now that his opinion of the organization would be that it is essentially a cult.

Yeah, I would really like to dialogue with Excalibur. Their NWT is so bad and misleading that it is near impossible to dialogue on scripture. He will not read anything I give him or tell him to read about. I told him to read about Arians in the year 325 and about the formulation of the Nicene creed. I think the JW’s are modern Arians if anyone knows about them. They changed the passage about the eucharist when jesus says ‘this is my body’ to ‘this is a symbol of my body’. So you can’t convince them of real presence. This is actually worse than Protestants who read “this is my body” and interpret it as a symbol. I could go on and on. I went thru the same thing in the beginning but when I boned up he pretty much shut off dialogue on his part.

I told him to read Deutoromony 18 where prophecy must be fulfillled to be of god. I told him to read Isaiah 22 to get where jesus got the words concerning the Keys for peter and loosing and binding authority. He won’t look at it.

Teachccd, you are right that it will take more than what I can do from the bible in opening my JW friend’s mind. My husband has even advised that I stop wasting my time discussing with her. But as in your experience, the crossing of our paths led me to a journey that I do not for one bit regret – it propelled me to take a close(r) look at my faith.

My JW friend is indeed focused on the end of times. As one of her proof-texts she used Mark 13:32 to prove the inferiority of Jesus to Jehovah, by not knowing the day or the hour, that, only the Father knows. That stumped me alright. I struggled to come up with refuting verses. Unlike her resources, there is no easy index for me to use. But I believe the Holy Spirit was guiding me because I found the counter proof text to support my side of the argument. So, on our next round, I offered Rev 22:12-13 (Jesus does know the day or the hour, for he is the Alpha and the Omega) and Col 2:3 (that Jesus does not lack in wisdom and knowledge, according to the Apostle Paul).

I likewise addressed the Catholic view on the end of the world. I really hoped it was a teaching, if not sharing, moment with her. I explained that the Church teaches us not to be pre-occupied with the Second Coming of Christ, that we should live our lives according to what Jesus taught us. Whenever the end of the world comes, whether it comes before old age or illness takes us, we would be ready.

The multiple failed predictions of the Watchtower about the ‘conclusion of the system of things’ should have shaken her. But chances are she will not question Watchtower pronouncements notwithstanding its obvious lack of authority in interpreting scripture and establishing doctrine. I doubt she will risk being disfellowshipped, a scary place to be, as you pointed out. I do not wish for my friend to suffer, but I hope the seed is planted. I pray that with God’s grace and intercession of St. Paul, the seed takes root in her mind and a situation arises for a conversion to the true faith.

Teachccd, thank you for your kind words.

Their scripture is different. Their god is different. Their theology, especially their eschatology is different. Their savior is different. Their prophecies have unfailingly failed. They are not Christian, by the universal definition of Christianity. They are, in fact, Watchtower Witnesses.

Sometimes angels come to us disguised as Jehovah’s Witnesses. 🙂 I really don’t think that I would be as far into my faith as I am if it wasn’t for the three years of opposition. We also learn patience, understanding, fortitude and fervency. So all while we can be taken to the brink of insanity with their scriptural dance we can also learn to really appreciate our ancient Christian faith. I still continue to pray for my friend and in God’s time he will eventually come to know the truth, if not in this lifetime it will definitely be in the next. Fight the good fight and never, ever give up. You are definitely not wasting your time. God bless you and I thank you for your kindness as well… teachccd 🙂

I also have a “friend” who is a JW, and I mean “friend” because ever since I questioned her actions based on her principles on one occassion, she has been … different. I have tolerated her fellow JW friends coming to the house, and have tolerated her son coming into my home and telling my brother that we are all going to Hell because we’re not JW and that we are idol worshippers and our religion is based on lies and based on pagan beliefs yadda yadda yadda. In other words, she unfortunately can dish it out but can’t take it. When she was quesioned she became very angry with me. I am supposed to tolerate her accusations of the Catholic Church being corrupt and extremely wealthy and coersive, but evidently I am not allowed to rebut her and her silliness because she just gets mad.

However, I do have a solid foundation and frankly because of that solid foundation, in addition to the fact that we as Catholics are not required to read the Bible, I am a bit rusty in finding proof of my rebuttals. You just don’t need them as much when you have a solid foundation. I was born and raised in a predominantly Catholic environment and never had the reason to dig up “proof” to dispute some of the ridiculous claims made by these people.

So I ordered the book you recommended. I hope it will save me the trouble of sifting and hunting 🤷 I used to be very good at digging up these things when I was … 15. But since that was a while ago, I haven’t had the opportunity or need to bicker back and forth with someone whose hero’s pulled lies right out of their butts and paraded them as absolute truths. It’s actually getting quite annoying really.

I still don’t understand how they can take grossly mistranslated and misconstrued passages out of the Bible, and done so by unqualified people, and then tell me that RC’s are going to Hell for being wrong. I thought they didn’t believe in Hell in the first place?

To the OP, I hope that you and your friend can remain friends after your sessions. There’s nothing worse than when two friends can’t respect each others’ differences and just get on with their own lives. Even worse when the friend is constantly dishing it out on you one way or another, and then can’t take it when questioned in kind.

You know, that’s very true. Since moving to the Bible Belt, I’ve only met a handful of fellow RC’s. And I’ve always had a hard time attending Mass to begin with, though I continued to live by the RC rules aside from that, and pray very often. But now with the Advent season coming, and someone attacking my beliefs, I find myself missing my fellow RC companions and the rituals I left behind up north. If you have a solid foundation, I think it draws you closer. It certainly can’t hurt to do the research again, like we did when we were younger. It’s kind of like renewing our faith. And you do tend to gain a lot in the process.

With a basic knowledge of Greek, you can deal with them using the Kingdom Interlinear Translation (although I recommend having the Strongest Strong’s or another non JW interlinear available to compare with). Since you will be able to compare the translation of one Greek word to another translation you can show them where they change the meaning without cause. It’s well known that the KIT doesn’t match the NWT word for word (for example see catholicxjw.com/Wordwasgod.html).

Dave Armstrong, a man who has a very low tolerance level for false teachings, has a good resource list at socrates58.blogspot.com/2008/07/catholic-resources-on-jehovahs.html including links back to Catholic Answers resources.

I have had ONE success in this regard. My ex-wife was an active JW when we married and became Catholic a few years later.
The NWT is not based on ANY translation…it was rendered by five unschooled untrained members of their HQ in Brooklyn. While the Douay Rheims was the translation of a translation I don’t think the same is true for The New American Bible and I know the New Jerusalem Bible is translated from the original languages. I’ve never found a JW that could find their way around the fact that the Greek Catholics and the Greek Orthodox have the bible IN GREEK and still believe in the trinity.

Hello I was born and raised JW, and as Rolltide said it took years for me to understand
The Catholic position.

Jehovahs witnesses are very good people and realy think they have The Truth.
The problem is that Jehovahs witnesses have been taught that all other religions are inspired by satan to mislead people, because of this they won’t trust any other bible or books and they will NOT have an open mind for fear of being tricked by the devil.

My advise is to make sure they understand WHY Catholics claim to be The Church.
Many don’t know about apostolic succesion or how old The Catholic Church is…
This will suprise many that were born and raised Jehovahs witnesses.

After showing them FACTS proving apostolic succesion, explain to them what the Eucharist is as most will have NO IDEA, be SURE to show them scripture proving the real presence.
Ask to use the king james version because most Jehovahs witnesses won’t mind using it.

Next it is important to show them scripture where Christ gives athority to forgive sins
This will be shocking because they never realy thought of those scriptures that way.
Show scripture where many leave Christ because of his teachings on eating his flesh and drinking his blood.

Get into a pattern of showing scripture and then how that scripture is practiced in the church. If you do this, no Jehovahs witness that is realy seeking God can ignore scriptures
That Jehovahs Witnesses CLEARLY don’t obey, there christian consience will force them to
Keep studying untill they are sure they are where God wants them to be. If they stay on the path of humbly seeking truth…they WILL have to leave the watchtower ( after years of study and deprograming)

DO NOT debate the Trinity first, because it is an immediate turn of to them and is one of the MOST difficult things for them to grasp.
DO NOT debate praying to saints first again immediate turn of, if a Jehovahs witness sees you praying in front of statues it will LOOK LIKE you are directly involved with satanic practice and WILL scare them. This is not as funny as some Catholics think because they will
More then likely never consider the Catholic faith again it could stumble them so much.

You can bring up failed predictions, one of the most recent is THE GENERATION OF 1914
Change. They taught for many years that Armegedon would come before the generation of 1914 passed away…well people of the age of reason living during 1914 are getting very old
And the Watchtower organization is trying to change this without people directing much attention to it.

Peetey:

So how goes the dialog with your JW friend? Have you spoken with him/her lately, and what did he/she say?

🙂

Hi All,
I have been reading this thread. I, too, have a JW friend and we do “study” together. Like one other poster I learned a great deal about my own Catholic Faith which I might not have learned if I was not trying to refute what she says. I will say she is knowledgeable in her NWT. They are subjected to many hours a week of mandatory (I would call it brain washing) study. She does have a NAB and the CCC. She was born and raised a Catholic. I pray that she be brought back to the truth as now I realize that the things I say fall on deaf ears. Only God can bring her back.

Jeanne
