Jehovah's Witnesses came today

I had a friendly talk with a father, his son, and the son’s friend…all of which were Jehovah’s Witnesses. They tried to give me some Bible stuff but I said I already have a Bible…

The guy who I was talking with said he grew up Catholic but started reading the Bible and “realized how easy it is to see what the Bible is saying.” Which sounded like was partly the reason why he left the Church.

Anyway, I asked when his church was founded. He said something like 1880’s. I asked how come he didn’t believe in the church that Jesus Christ himself started over 2000 years ago. He didn’t want to argue, but rather explain some things about the Bible.

So I asked what he thought about when Jesus says in the Bible something like “Upon you Peter, I will build my Church.” He said that Peter was a faithful apostle, and something to the effect that Jesus was the head of the Church, not Peter.

What I would really like to know have to do with these points: 1)He says that he does not believe that Jesus nor the Holy Spirit are God. 2)He doesn’t believe in the immortality of souls. 3) He doesn’t believe in “hellfire.”

Are there any Bible verses in which might help to explain the Church’s teaching on these three points? Maybe also some Bible verses that say the Church is the one true church.

They asked if they could come back as they were running short on time, and they couldn’t find their Bible verse dealing with Peter and the Church. I said they were more than welcome to come back…thanks for the help…John

JW’s say they believe in Sola Scriptura, so before getting to slinging Bible verses around (which is fine) get them to see the unavoidable problems with Sola Scriptura:

One other thing; They have been instructed to never ever accept non-JW literature, so you must present your information yourself or have them listen to audio resources while they are visiting.
 
You also need to pick up THIS great apologetics study from San Juan Catholic Seminars.

BTW, you may have just really messed up because these folks do this all the time and they will attempt to rope you into a Bible Study with them there in your home on a weekly basis and you DO NOT wanna do that.

Note also that they have their own version of the Bible that was translated by their founder C.T. Russell (a newspaperman, not a scholar) and it is all kindsa messed up.

Others have given you plenty of links to answer then and so I urge you to get your shot in at defending the faith and then cut these folks loose because you can spend a lot of time with them and get nowhere. They prey upon Catholics and anyone else who doesn’t know the Bible and their faith well.
That’s how they seduced the guy that you talked to away from the faith.

Actually, the New World Translation was not translated by Charles Taze Russell. It was translated by an anonymous committee of the Governing Body some 50 years after Russell died in 1916. None of the members of the translation committee had any competence to translate the scriptures, and ex-Governing Body member Raymond Franz gives their names in his book CRISIS OF CONSCIENCE.

What is more interresting is the New World Translation is almost word for word Grebber’s New Testament which that so-called translation committee had access to. Grebber was a so-called catholic spiritualists who translated the new testament by speaking with the dead.

I thought that it was interesting that the former JW that was on the Catholic Answers radio show last week mentioned how important it is to befriend JW’s. They can not be friends with anyone that is not a JW with the exception of someone they think they might be able to convert.

If a Catholic comes on too strong with the Catholic faith, it might scare them away.

Her suggestion was to be a friend and appear to be open to what they are saying and dropping little bits of the truth as seeds. I am paraphrasing a bit, but that was the general idea if I understood her correctly. You might want to listen to the show that I posted above.
