Jehovah's Witnesses in general

Wow, this is kind of funny, but just now as I was on Catholic Answers, a very nice young dad with his little girl knocked on my door. He was a Jehovah’s Witness, but, sadly, I wasted an opportunity to help him. I’m a fairly new, sporadic member, & my knowledge of the Bible & other religions is very weak. I took his materials for my own use, but when he asked to come back I tried to politely tell him that I was a devout Catholic & wouldn’t want to waste his time. He was very nice & seemed to appreciate the honesty.

My question is, I get the other religions so confused & usually can’t remember which ones might be really anti-Catholic or think the Pope is the anti-Christ. I always confuse Mormonism with Jehovah’s Witnesses. I have a friend who is so well informed that she meets regularly with a young Jehovah’s Witness who is trying to convert her. She is so knowledgable about the bible that I think she will convert this young girl before too long. I would never have the confidence or skill for that, but is there a good source for some of the basic tenets of these faiths? Is there a better way to respond when these folks come to your door?

Hi mmm1. Go over to the non-Catholic Groups area at Catholic Answers. There is a link on the left side of the home page. There are articles over there on both Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses.

There are huge differences between the Mormons and the Jehovah’s Witnesses. There are also similarities.

I wouldn’t worry about not being able to “witness” strongly to your visitors. You probably did the best thing in telling them that you are devout Catholic and wouldn’t be interested. After you’ve learned some more about them, you’ll be ready for their next visit, which shouldn’t be all that long from today.

I just want to thank both of you so much for the help. Allweather, I’m sure that I will return to that section of the CA site again & again now, so thanks. I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to remember any of those points that are mentioned as “stumpers” when I come into contact with a JW again. I know I’ll remember the basics, though, & thought it was so well written.

I think I also saw a few minutes of The Journey Home Episode that you were on Jeff, but I had to leave the house after only a few minutes (Of course, it was nothing that you said). It was well done, & I recognized you when I read the article about you on the web site(I think it was one that was in a Mich. paper, & it mentioned your more-than-impressive background in chemistry) . I have to say, though, of all the things that I couldn’t understand today after reading the different JW’s beliefs, I think I found organic & biochemistry even harder to fathom… Seriously , though, thanks for the link to the site, & I will recommend it to my friend who meets with a Jehovah Witness member regularly.

Read the book Jehovah’s witnesses answered by David A. Reed.

Reed is an X-JW and he goes through verse by verse the contradictions of the JW doctrine. It also outlines there doctrine and beleifs. It has really enlightened me and helped me to understand JW’s

If someone was interested in learning some of the basic tenets of the Catholic Faith, it would probably be more useful to go straight to the source instead of starting with anti-Catholic, ex-Catholic critics…

I am afraid BibleSteve that your advice may not be taken. On this forum people are encouraged to visit the anti sites to learn more about the faiths in question. I have no idea why this is so. I suppose that many are afraid to read sites that are not anti of those mentioned religions.

I find it all very strange, of course. It would be like me on mormonapologetics recommending some anticatholic sites to an honest inquiry about the catholic faith. But in truth I would send them here and to EWTN for answers.

Because I have a mormon background, I try to be fair. It is the christian thing to do afterall.

I have found that Catholic explantations of other religions to be honest and fair. I have read publications of the churches in question and they do not tell all about their faith. For instance, the JWs and the LDS will not be fortright about their dealing with blacks. I agree to read their publications such as the Watchtower and the BoM but to get all the truth you must go to the Catholic Church.

Sounds fair enough. I just hate it when we aren’t being victimized.
