wait wait wait. and forgive me if I am wrong - my eyes will fail finding the post quickly - but didn’t someone on the purgatory forum state that the Greek translation doesn’t use commas, therefore, carefully placed different ways, the meaning could change?
“I say to you, today that you will be with me in Paradise.” i.e.,with Him that day vs
“I say to you today, that you will be with me in Paradise.” i.e., after the resurrection of your body

Not challenging, BTW, just learning by questioning…
And this, my friends, is why it is so important why we (the Church) consider the early councils to have determined which books will be in the canon and which books will not, based on the intent behind the context of the writings of each book and the earlier council of Nicaea to help pave this theology.

I wish Protestants can see the correlation with what the JW’s do in this scenario to what they do with their bible-alone theology.😉

Peace to all!!!

My ex wife has taken in a lodger who is a Jehovas Witness. My ex is not a practicing Catholic and has no strong faith views. My daughters aged 10 and 15 often stay there and will interact with the lodger (24 yr old girl). Is there anything I need to know or be expecially concerned about?
The Witness will likely feel obligated to “help” the girls by sharing her beliefs and inviting them to read and discuss Witness literature. Witnesses sincerely think Catholicism is wicked apostasy. They think Catholics are ungodly and worldly, or at the very least, mislead. Anything you can do to gently show your daughters otherwise will help to protect them.

re: this thread on JW’'s

I just took a look on the Catholic Answers Shop Tab & looked up books: The incomparable book by JASON EVERT called “Änswering Jehovah’s Witnesses” is a screaming deal for only $2 plus postage!!!

This is one of the best books on JW out there. GET IT, READ IT, integrate it & then you will have a much clearer understanding of the pitfalls of this retread Arian heresy.

If a heresy has worked in the past, it will certainly resurrectect itself & be foisted on unwitting humans again. The crafty one doesn’t change his MO does he?

I have spent nearly 10 years collecting JW books in thrift stores & studying so it takes a lot especially for me to get a grip on what their lingo adds up to.

Non Christian World Sects (see Patrick Madrid’s website) use the same words but have applied different meanings.

ALL of you who are partly interested in this topic at least should GET THIS BOOK!!!

JW’s fancy themselves to be christians but, they are not.

They reject the Divinity of Christ and are repulsed (spiritually) by organized discursive prayer. They are a cult rightly so.

For a diehard, ramble-on, won’t listen to reason JW…pray out loud and pray the St. Michael Archangel prayer. They will cease, desist and flee from your presence. I promise.

You’re right, it is a most awkward and preposterous translation given what was going on…
.
Well stated and understood. And it started with a comma…

This is what the JW s at my work do. They come across very friendly and nice, but it is impossible to really talk to them about religion because they just parrot back what they have been taught is the truth…and the Watchtower has rewritten their ‘infallible’ bible so as to back up everything they want to believe

One thing I don’t see mentioned is suicide. One of the JW’s I know admitted that he has 3 close J.W. friends that have committed suicide due to the pressures of being shunned. Is he an anomaly, or are they covering up ? My coworker said that since they are encouraged not to socialize with any but JWs, when they leave the church, they lose all of their friends and family.

I had a co-worker who had never had any exposure to any Church who started to date this ex-Jehovah’s Witness girl…
…In around 6 months he said they had started to go to these “meetings” where these elders would show up at their appt.
…Then they started to attend a JW hall ( not the one her family attended ).

The whole point to all of this was that he said she was depressed and considering to kill herself because none of her JW family or friends would talk to her…
…Unless she returned to the JW church.
…End result was this guy became a JW and tried to sell me some reading material!

So yes, I’m pretty sure what you heard is true - they do that kind of thing.

Just goes to show that if you can believe that Jesus could have sinned and lost His Salvation…
…And if that would have happened ‘God’ would have annihilated Jesus eternally.
…Then you can justify believing in or doing about anything.

True. To relate this back to the OP, if both daughters became JWs and one later decided to leave, the other would be required to shun her. Shunning, or “disfellowshipping” as they call it, is a cruel weapon that seems righteous to a JW until on the receiving end. No one is allowed to easily leave, and if they do, other JWs will assume they are an unrepentant sinner having done some terrible deed.

There is irony in this with my situation… I am the only Catholic left in my family and most of the other family members have converted to Jehovah’s Witness. 😦 For years now I have proclaimed/preached/pleaded to them I will never convert and, thanks to them, I am now much more Catholic than ever before.👍 I have had to start distancing myself, my wife and child from them but they continue to peruse conversation and proselytizing.

I have made it as clear as I can how wrong I think their teachings are, or more pointed, how untrue their beliefs are in other religions. I know this does not equate to someone being in the organization and leaving (having the truth then leaving) but I don’t know how else to communicate it without joining the organization, which I would never do, just to show them.

Not that I want my family to shun me but there seems to be a double standard here.🤷

Peace to all!!!

I can vouch that this book is fantastic to actualy get an idea about Jehovah’s Wtinesses, it is very well researched and the bonus is that it tackels the subject from a Catholic point of view. When I first started research into the witnesess it was alarming to find when reading works done by protestant writters to often come across direct or indirect slights against the Catholic church when the author was debunking a particular Witness theology. One won’t find any of those kind of cheap shots in Jason’s book.
Also I have found it a great help when talking to witnesses to have a good understanding of the Catholic Faith and the history of the Church, one of the Witnesses favorit tactics is to change the subject when they find themselves on shakey ground and this change of subject will often be an attack on your faith, for e.g once when talking to a witness at my door about the divinity of christ the witnesses soon realised that I had nearly every refrence from the gospel of John at my finger tips and could back these up convincingly, and so I soon found myself defending the so called great apostacy, then the inquasition and when no head way was made there I was then assulted with clergy abuse within the church.
In recent times one of the best resouces out there for Catholics is the Ignatius Study Bible New Testament it has great commentry from the Catholic perspective and a wonderful refrence section that includes all the main Dogmas of the Catholic Church with refrence to the scriptures that back these up. Invaluable when confronted by a so called Bible only sect.

You are right. Thier teachings are wrong. keep up the good fight and defend the faith against these prowling lions.
Reassure yourself and be clear in the knowladge that unfortunatly you relatives have been decieved by a Millenialist, Faccist, Totalitarian sect and have now become part of the Watch Towers prolatariet. i.e those within a group or society that have nothing else to offer the goup except thier labour. If a Jehovahs Witnes thinks that he or she has some kind of intrisic value or is appreciated just for who they are by the society see how long this will last if they decided to withdraw thier free labour from the "door to door’ work.
I have a simmlar experiance to you, stay strong in the faith and attend church regularly, contemplate the real presence of our lord when recieving the euchrist, pray and and humbely marvel at God’s wisdom when he gave to us the community of the faithfull and the sacraments of the Church.
Forgive them and pray for them.

Peace to all!!!

Peace my friend, I am not in your exact position at the moment but I will be in the future. My girlfriends family are all JW’s, her mother is the religious head of their family, and she is very devout and very involved in the spiritual upbringing of the grandkids. I’ve already made it abundantly clear to my GF that her mother is to not discuss (with our future children) anything religious that is contrary to the Catholic faith. It’s a sensitive subject, but you have to set the rules as the parent, and it looks like you have. If my future mother-in-law could not agree to that simple request, then I would have no choice but to not allow our children to be with her unsupervised.
That would be a choice she would have to make, as I have already made mine

It sounds like your family has already decided that they do not care what your religious preference is, and they are going to continue proselytizing you and your children against your will. We all must make our own decisions, but I for one will not stand for this. I understand that you do not what to shun your family away from their grandparents, cousins, etc, but that is not the case. They are the ones who continue to try and convert you and your family against your will, they would be forcing your hand by you having to keep your family away from them.

I like you used this moment in my life to become more Catholic and educated on all things God, AMEN for that! May his Holy Spirit guide us and keep us strong in our faith, and in his Church that he left behind.

My sister in law continualy did this with our children, eventualy I had to write to her and request that she give us the respect to make our own decisions with our children.
I explained to her that even though I did not agree with the religious choice that she had made in her life, and felt that she had made the decision to place her trust in an absolutly untrustworthy authority, I still respected her right to make those decisions for herself and to bring up her children the way that she saw fit. I then asked her to give us that same respect to make these same decisions for ourselves.
I also sent her back the latest watch tower she had sent addressed to our children after critiquing it with a red pen and included a short catachism of the Catholic Church and concluded the letter with my prayer that one day she and her family will join us in full communion with Christ in his one holy, apostolic and Catholic Church.
This seems to have done the trick for now and it has been some time since I have come home from work and found watch tower propaganda scatterd around the kitchen table. Unfortunatly it has also been some time since I have heard from ms sister in law however that is her choice not mine.

Be aware. - She may show your daughter what the Bible says and it may well contradict what the Catholic church teaches.
  • If this is a problem, why not ask her to show you the proof first and make sure it is correct. 😉
Then you can make an informed decision 👍

WAY TO GO! Jason shows much charity, doesn’t attack, just gives the facts…’

As I said before, if you are the least interested in the JW system, BUY THIS BOOK!😉

First of all, there is not just one way to evangelize. We have no idea whatsoever what MJ did in his private life. In addition, there is no proof as to what religion he was or wasn’t throughout his life, only rumors of. His parents were JW…one of his brothers is muslim, and MJ was said to have tried various religions in the course of his life. There is no proof for or against any evanglization efforts even if he was JW…
You are wrong. Michael Jackson was baptized a Jehovah Witness. I am not sure when, he didn’t say, but he did speak of being baptized. Also, he spoke of pioneering or service or door to door, even after he was famous. A lot of times he was disguised so people wouldn’t recognize him, but he talked about how children and others would catch on to who he was and also told stories of being chased by dogs when he went door to door in the 1980s. This was before he publically denounced the religion in 1987. He didn’t have to do that if he wasn’t baptized, but because he was baptized he did it so the elders would leave him alone.

yeah, I thought so. And yes, there are many ways to evangelize; door to door isn’t the only way. But I mean, c’mon, the best of disguises mean nothing to an ardent fan of such a huge star.

Yeah, to answer your previous question further, from my memory Michael Jackson had a lot of pressure put on him by the elders of his church. They felt he was being too showy, too sexual in his lyrics and dance, and pretty much nit-picked at him. That is why he has that disclosure at the beginning of Thriller, because the elders didn’t want him to release that video. After making that video he was seriously thinking of not releasing it, but John (I don’t remember his last name- the director) told him he was crazy. After all the fight to get the video made with the record company feeling the promotion of Thriller was over, to not providing the funds for it, to selling the making of the video in order to get the money to pay for the video to be made, he insisted that Michael release the video.

I think there were a lot of reasons he left that religion, but he was very devout up until his late twenties. He did pioneer (door to door) and go to the assemblies, and the weekly meetings when he was home. I also remember him telling about how his brothers sent a prostitue for him and instead he said he took out the bible and studied with her.
