Jeremiah 31: 33-34 reads:
  1. See, days are coming—oracle of the LORD—when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.
  2. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors the day I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt. They broke my covenant, though I was their master—oracle of the LORD.
33 But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days—oracle of the LORD. I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.t
The question in Bible Class was "What is this “new covenant” Jeremiah announces and when will it be made?

We ran out of time due to discussing the other 7 questions, so we did not get round to this question. I thought it was referring to Jesus and that the new covenant was His sacrifice on the cross for our salvation. Have I got this right, or am I missing something?

Thanks

PS. I know it is lazy posting the question but I have a lot of reading to get through each day and I admit to taking time out to watch the Great British Sewing Bee tonight.

Read Hebrews 8 and 9 I’m sure that will help you.

Jeremiah 31:31 is the only place in the OT that talks about a “new covenant” and Jesus is the first to use this term in the NT, at the so-called “last supper.”

As the previous post said, Hebrews dwells on the old covenant and the new.

John Bergsma has a book out called Bible Basics for Catholics: A New Picture of Salvation History, and it is solely about the covenants in the Bible, climaxing in the New Covenant in the blood of Jesus Christ. text, 156 pages

Scott Hahn and his St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology publishes a journal called Spirit and Letter (or vice verse), Vol 8. Hahn has the first essay where he clarifies a mistranslation in Hebrews. The upshot of which is that Jesus’ death is the death required because the Sinai covenant was broken. At the same time, his blood (death) is the sign of the establishment of the “new covenant” that was prophesied by Jeremiah. This is an outstanding essay by Hahn.

Thanks dronald and sirach2v4,

I will read Hebrews 8 and 9 and look up the Scott Hahn essay, probably toward the end of the week when I can give it my full attention. Having come home from work, completed today’s Bible study and Lenten reflections, I will be heading out to mass shortly and as it is a day of fasting I’m not at full speed.

The new covenant would come into effect when Christ returns and “makes all things new”.
