Jerry used a tasteless gay slur (rhymes with hag) in a “joke”.

And yes, he should have apologized. There are quite a few Gays out there working for him and helping him in his mission.

I watch every year and was kind of surprised by it. I think he realized his mistake. I cut him slack cause of his age. I think most people did.

I got the sense he was improvising and trying to be funny while he was tired and worn down. It was an imprudent comment, one that he probably wished he could take back right after saying it.

An apology was necessary, but I don’t think the comment is any big deal.
 
Should or shouldn’t, he did apologize. Nice of him.

Though I actually thought the ‘illiterate’ part was more offensive 🤷
 
The version I read indicated that he immediately regretted it. Give the guy a break. :mad:
 
Jerry always babbles on the telethon - I remember when he called someone an “Alte Kocker”, which means “old fart” in Yiddish, and is not particularly offensive. People thought he used an obscenity with a similar hooha.
 
I think offensive, unkind, uncharitable remarks always deserve an apology–no matter the target. I also agree that his age, his good works, and fatigue are enough to cut him the slack he deserves. I have made a remark or two in anger or from fatigue which I immediately regretted. Fortunately, I have always been forgiven for the imprudence.

I agree. I’m not nearly his age;) , but if I get over tired I get really loopy and have had moments of “what was I thinking!” Who am I kidding, I don’t have to be exhausted:blush: . He has apologized, he should be forgiven.
 
We certainly are ultra sensitive these days. “Sticks and stones…” There was great wisdom in those days. Now, we are voluntarily going to give away our freedom of speech. We would be onto Jesus too for calling the poor pharisees, “White washed sepluchers”. He would have to apologize for much of His “insensitivy”. And concerning homosexuality, the Bible uses a very politically incorrect word, “abomination.” We need to be careful about conforming to the culture especially with regard to allowing the elimination of freedom of speech.

Yet at the same time Jesus said to the Pharisees and lawyers “Prostitutes and tax collectors are getting into the Kingdom before you.” I don’t think Jesus had unkind words to say about sinners and neither should we. Jerry Lewis apologized and I accept that. If he hadn’t I would just trade in any movies of his that I had and stop watching the Labor Day Telethon. Why is it that free speech has to be protected when making comments about gays but everyone gets so upset when they make comments about us? Love one another folks. That would mean no uncharitable remarks for any reason!
 
I am not advocating uncharitable remarks. But don’t you see that the inordinate fuss over “names” that are not equal to “sticks and stones”. And besides, if you were at the marriage ammendment event you would have noticed the actual “name slingers” calling the Christians “hatemongers”, “homophobic haters”, etc. But they had the freedom to do this. It was and shouldn’t be called a “hate crime”. My point is that we will eventually lose our freedom of speech to even say things are wrong, such as homosexual acts from the pulpit. Sometimes allowing someone to speak their mind is a price we have to pay for freedom. The founders were very careful of free speech. Why then are we so afraid to come down on “rappers” who are much more hateful?

Granted allowing someone to speak their midn may be the cost of freedom. I don’t take offense anymore by what either side says. If someone says something disparaging either way I expect them to apologize or I ignore them. Noone will ever take away the right of someone to call something a sin. But I call uncharitable remarks from either side of this issue a sin. I call upon both sides to cease and desist. We are called to love not hate no what the manmade law permits. I will not say anything bad about Christians but I will not say anything bad about homosexuals either.
 
It’s no funnier to call a homosexual a “fag” than it is to call a Catholic a “dogan” or a “bead counter.” All are pejorative terms.

Since he shouldn’t have done it, it’s good he apologized.

what about Imus who said a bad remark and it wasnt in a family atmosphere, actually he was expected to say shocking things. Then apoligized, it was not good enough, and his charity was almost shut down by Mr Sharpton et el.

same kinda situation

free speech is annoying, the second someone stops it, then its not so free anymore.

Christians need free speech in order to speak of God, its the good with the bad.

Jerry and Imus both said sorry and that should be enough. Let them sort their hearts out with the Lord, its not our problem. 🙂 The charities should not suffer, and besides the one without the sin has the first stone.

Agree with all of the above. But likewise if we allow free speech we can’t shut down the gays comments on Christians.
