The note for verse 15 is as follows:
“This is not a direct reference to purgatory but several Doctors of the Church have taken it as a basis for that doctrine.”
Why would a CATHOLIC bible with an Imprimatur, etc. have a statement like this that is contradictory, as clearly stated, to teachings of the Church and its Doctors??
Now I consider the JB to be pretty decent as far as notes go…much more conservative than the NJB…so this kind of surprises me. I find it to be quite a bold statement considering that this verse is key relative to that doctrine.
Now for comparison purposes the Confraternity Bible states this:
ver 15–the teaching of this verse implies the teaching of Christian tradition on purgatory…
Quite different…I guess the liberal thinking of the 60’s truly did infiltrate everything, including Scripture.
