I really like the Jerusalem Bible for devotional reading and am always on the lookout for reasonably priced editions to give away to friends.

Does anyone own one of the Jerusalem Bibles that are being published in the Phillipines? I was wondering if they are worth owning. I have, at one time or another, owned the large red hardback, the fake leather edition, and the awful gold/white hardback (that was published several years ago).

Also, does anyone know of a compact or medium sized Jerusalem Bible that can be obtained at a reasonable cost? I sometimes see the compact leather editions from the sixties in ebay, but they always end up around $70-80. I would like one to keep in my car or at work.

I like it too. I always check for copies in used bookstores and thrift stores, but it seems to be getting harder to find the 1966 edition in the United States. I purchased a copy through Amazon.

You probably already know this, but people are sometimes surprised to hear that J.R.R. Tolkien was one of the editors and translators of the English edition of the Jerusalem Bible. He translated the entirety of the Book of Jonah, as well as the initial draft of the translation of the Book of Job and overseeing its final draft, and did some editorial work elsewhere.

Tolkien commented on the Book of Jonah in a letter to his grandson, Michael on 24 April 1957:

“Incidentally, if you look at Jonah you’ll find that the ‘whale’ - it is not really said to be a whale, but a big fish - is quite unimportant. The real point is that God is much more merciful than ‘prophets’, is easily moved by penitence, and won’t be dictated to even by high ecclesiastics whom he has himself appointed.”
 
I have several copies. I bought them all off e-bay. It’s kinda hit and miss there. I have been lucky to have gotten mine at resonable prices. I also bought the CTS bible. It is the Jerusalem Bible with the Grail Psalms. Print is small. The modern reprints are awful! The popular edition from the UK is probably the best of the modern reprints.

30 years ago my, then Catholic, wife wanted a bible. I didn’t know anthing about translations (I am a good Catholic) and went to a Christian Book Store (little did I know that didn’t mean Catholic as well as other Christians) and asked for a “Catholic Bible”. They sold me a Jerusalem Bible in red morocco leather, very nice. She used it for many years before de-poping. That version goes for big bucks on ebay today. It is quite luxurious and I wish I had it in new form now that I know something about the bible. The JB notes are extraordinary.
 
The Catholic Truth Society New Catholic Bible Presentation Edition is really nice. Gorgeous burgundy unpadded leather hardcover with nice stiff boards in an sturdy slipcase and the nicest gold gilding I have seen on any bible currently available by any publisher. It is the most attractive bible in my collection. It’s bigger than a compact but smaller than a standard. Thick and chunky, very nice in the hand. about the same size as the MTF Roman Daily Missal if you are familiar with those.

Just in case you didn’t know, the CTS bible is the original Jerusalem bible with “Lord” replacing “Yahweh” in the text and has the Grail Psalms. The notes are newly commisssioned for this edition and in very contemporary English but not as abundant as the NABRE. Another nice feature is an explanation with each book’s introduction on it’s place in the U.K. Liturgy.

I ordered direct from CTS in the U.K. and received it 2 days later via DHL. Believe my total cost was about 60 U.S.dollars.

Maybe someone more tech-savy than me will post a link.

Thanks, I’ll work on my linking skills. I really enjoy co-reading the JB alongside my Douay. I am eagerly awaiting a 1960 CTS Douay pocket-size edition I just scored on Ebay.👍

Does this Bible have an index or concordance? Are the notes as liberal as
the nabre?

Sorry so long in responding. There is an index for the textual notes but no concordance. The liturgical guide is pretty detailed. I’m hesitant to present my opinions on the tone of a particular Bible translation or it’s notes because I may say something that would turn someone away from what might be their ideal Bible. If you would like to post some notes or verses from the NABRE you are curious about (maybe one at a time so people can follow along easier), I will post the corresponding note from the CTS if one exists. :idea:
