Hi! I’m a second-year business school student at Georgetown University. I’m curious to learn more about Jesuits and Jesuit values. What does Jesuitism mean to you, and do you support it? What should I know, as I decide my relationship to Jesuit values? Are Jesuits Catholic? Thank you, Alasdair

Jesuits are a Catholic order. They founded most of the Catholic schools and universities where I come from. I have a high opinion of them, especially their intellectualism and their dedication to education.

Where do you come from?

Are the conspiracy theories about Jesuits true?

I don’t know what the conspiracy theories are–just that they exist.

Something about secret archives in the Vatican. I’ll watch some YouTube videos then update you.

YouTube videos are not a trusted source of information. Often they are made by hysterical Protestants with an agenda against the Catholic Church. I advise you not to base your views of the Church on YouTube videos, as they purposefully spread misinformation about the Church- common examples of this are Mary “worship” , the early Church was Protestant, and other nonsensical lies. I’m sure you can relate, I’ve seen many videos making non-factual and even outrageously false claims about the Church of the Latter Day Saints.
It’s good that you’ve made an account here. Please ask us if you have any questions about our Church, rather than Protestants who have never touched a Church history book. And please be aware that some Protestants know that what they say about the Catholic Church is lies, but still say so anyways. I’ve met several people who admitted this to me online. The reason for it eludes me, and far be it from me to accuse other Christians of evil intent, no matter how misguided they are. I only pray for them- as Christ ordered his disciples to do.
Christ’s peace.

Most of the super crazy conspiracy’s are probably not true. Most of them come from a time of when the Jesuits where converting people in protestant countries and the protestants freaked out because they were losing people so they made anti jesuit conspiracys and laws for example Elizabeth the 1st law outlawing catholic priest was known as the Jesuits etc law. Much of it is nonsense outdated lies that go back to a time of anti-Catholicism.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say conspiracy theories are almost never true, and conspiracy theories “revealed” by some guy making YouTube videos in his basement are never ever true.

The Jesuits are catholic the Pope is a Jesuit though for a short time the order was suppressed for about 40 years 1773 to 1814. The first bishop of the USA was a Jesuit John Carroll the cousin of Charles Carroll the only catholic signer of the declaration of independence. Georgetown was the first catholic college in the country and was founded by the Jesuits the Jesuits were really the building blocks of this countries catholic history. I have my personal opinions on today’s Jesuits but Catholicism would not have grown without the help of the Jesuits in this country.

Thank you Sean. I like this response. Georgetown inspired me to pray to a saint besides Mary for the first time – St. Thomas More. It felt very satisfying. I belong to a different religion, so I can’t do that very much again, but I have immense respect for Catholicism. It’s sad how it’s so deeply Christian, but Protestants haven’t the slightest historical context in which to understand how it is. It’s sad that America is on that list of countries in which Catholics have faced persecution at the hands of Protestants. Pax tecum.

Dang, that’s wicked that people would knowingly spread mistruths about a religion.

I have a book now from the library, an anti-Jesuit tract called “Jesuit Juggling,” and I hope it will deepen my respect for Catholic faith. Most of the most popular kids in my class are Catholic. I’m especially interested in the idea that some people think Catholics are immoral, but they are judging them according to the Protestant work ethic, and Catholicism has completely different standards for measuring virtue. It’s not fair.

What are your personal opinions on today’s Jesuits? Some traditionalist Catholic guy on Twitter told me that Jesuits are not real Catholics.

I have a traditionalist Catholic friend who believes that Freemasonry is an anti-Catholic conspiracy.

The biggest conspiracy theory I’ve ever heard about Catholicism is that there is secret stuff going on in the Vatican.

Freemasonry is incompatible with Catholicism. Any Catholic who is/becomes a Freemason puts themselves in a state of mortal sin.
If you wish to discuss Freemasonry then start a new thread. The thread you opened is about the Jesuits.

Well they certainly are real Catholics I am pretty sure they are not Freemasons. I am not a big fan of the Jesuits today due to there the fact they are more liberal but I certainly believe they are catholic. I wouldn’t listen to him tbh.

Freemasonry legitimately has anti-Catholic origins, sure. That said, modern Masons are much more a fraternal group oriented towards public service and socializing than persecuting Catholics. It’s a pretty harmless thing in its modern form.

Talk to random Jesuits at Georgetown. I think you’ll find that they are all individuals with individual opinions, not members of a cult-like organization.

But keep in mind that the Jesuits were founded by a Spanish soldier, Ignatius Loyola, and he had a military model in mind when he founded the order. Obedience and discipline were essential. But they got too powerful politically and were disbanded by papal decree in the late 18th c. So in the past they were political (they were also behind the various plots against Queen Elizabeth and King James) and seen as a sinister force. This is also because they report directly to the Pope, not any local bishop.

Why not start with the Wikipedia article and go from there?
