My son, heretofore you have been taught to act the dissembler: among Roman Catholics to be a Roman Catholic, and to spy even among your own brethren; to believe no man, to trust no man. Among the Reformers, to be a Reformer; among the Huguenots, to be a Huguenot; among the Calvinists, to be a Calvinist; among the Protestants, generally to be a Protestant; and obtaining their confidence to seek even to preach from their pulpits and to denounce with all the vehemence in your nature our Holy Religion and the Pope; and to descend so low as to become a Jew among the Jews, that you might be enabled to gather together all information for your Order as a faithful soldier of the Pope.

A Protestant criticized that. What is the best answer?

God bless.

The Oath is totally bogus and fabricated, like the Roswell alien or Elvis still being alive. I especially love the whole ‘secret handshake’ thing. Seriously, the Jesuits are not some stupid university frat club or something - they usually wear clerical collars and always put ‘SJ’ after their names, thus advertising who they are to the whole world, they don’t need secret handshakes.

Your correspondent will have to give you better evidence than the mere assertion of this website (which can spout any lies that it wants) that this Oath was really used in the past and is still taken today.

Even if there is such a document in the Library of Congress, you could probably find other made-up or inaccurate documents in there - such as the famous ‘Dewey defeats Truman’ newspaper which is discussed at historybuff.com/library/reftruman.html or the infamous Protocols of the Elders of Zion which was a fake made-up book about the Jews used as propaganda against them in Russia.

Best of all - tell him to talk to an actual Jesuit about it, ask him about the Oath. If it’s still in use today then they’ve all taken it, and if they have then they’d believe that what it says is OK and be happy to admit to it.

Murder is still murder regardless of the motive (unless it’s literally in self-defence or open and legit warfare) and no Catholic religious order would tolerate the taking of an oath that requires murder.

Another thing - one of the big reasons the Church is against Freemasonry, for example, is their dislike of secret oath-taking. They’d hardly then turn around and tolerate the Jesuits taking some sort of secret oath.

The best answer is the same answer that one would give as to why they don’t believe in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. It is untrue, and it is vile, hateful propaganda.

Are Catholics doomed forever to have to answer every Protestant propaganda lie as though it were all quite reasonable and probable? Seems that way.

Just like the Jews will forever be condemned to have to answer the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which people still believe to this day is true. Jesus said the world would hate His followers. 🤷

Tell him the argument was much more interesting the first time around, when it was used against the Sophists.
