Jesuits

I just had to jump in here. My husband and I are both Jesuit-educated (Boston College, '74) and, in fact, met in a theology class (Faith, Reason and the Gospels) taught by a dear Jesuit. The Jesuits we had really taught you to think, and were brilliant.

At some point, B.C. seemed to go off the rails in some ways. It is a source of great sadness to me that a number of the pro-abortion Massachusetts politicians are B.C. grads; that is due in part to the cultural milieu in Massachusetts and the failure of the Church hierarchy there to be true leaders over the last several decades. Sometimes the emphasis on service, which is a hallmark of B.C., overshadows some of the harder tenets of the faith which are out of favor with the liberal elite in Massachusetts.

One of our closest, longtime friends is a Jesuit priest who was a roommate of my husband. He has an M.D. and a Ph.D., and his fields of expertise are bioethics, the ethics of health care, and the philosophy of medicine. He is one of the two smartest people I have ever met, and a man of great humor. He is so highly educated that we used to tease him by saying that the rest of us would be on social security by the time he had a “real” job and was done with his education!

My husband belongs to a group of “Ignatian Associates”, of which there are only a few groups in the U.S., as I understand. He and the other members employ the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, have regular get-togethers for Mass and prayer, and interact with the Jesuits from our local small Jesuit college. I know that when my husband had a hard time spiritually after uncovering some most unsavory details about the clerical abuse scandal here (he is a journalist), it was a wonderful Jesuit who met with him and helped him put things in perspective.

Individual Jesuits - like all of us - may be imperfect, but we’ve had too many good experiences to say anything against them. (We are, btw, quite orthodox Catholics.)

That is perfectly hilarious!!!
Genesis tells us that the Lord rested on the seventh day. What most people don’t know is what he did while he was on his day off.

The Franciscan says that God was thinking about the cross.

The Dominican says he was thinking about truth.

The Jesuit says God was trying to figure out what Aquinas and Bonaventure were talking about.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

Dixieagle,

Thanks for jumping into this thread. I this is what reassures me–that overall the Jesuit order is still faithful to the Church. I wonder if it’s just here in America that there seems more of those who aren’t faithful who give the order a bad reputation.

It is discouraging to see what’s happened with Catholic education as a whole in this country, Jesuit-run or not. You said you are near a small Jesuit-run college. May I assume it is a faithful one? May I ask which one it is? With six children whom we hope to see go on to college, I’m trying to keep track of the ones worth considering! Our first will need to start thinking along those line in the next couple of years.

Tracy 🙂
