I was wondering. How could Jesus simply forgive sins before the Cross? I know that he was God, but if he could forgive sins prior to the cross why was the cross necessary. When he forgave someones sins was the the same as propitiating for them?

Jesus died for The Truth because Man, in his fallen nature, hates The Truth. Those who killed Him, and rejected Him since His sacrificial death, continue to loathe truth and suppress it in the way they live, unintentionally or otherwise. Pagans have nothing salvific to offer the world. They live for all things human, and thrive by the corruption that doing so naturally instills in one’s psyche and behavior. Only through discipleship is one justified in the eyes of God.

Greetings herbalt and Everyone –
You asked, “How could Jesus simply forgive sins before the Cross?”

We live in time, in becoming, changing, transforming. With us causes always come before their effects. In the natural order I do not know of any exceptions.

God Exists in eternity and is not subject to the limitations of time. God is able to have an effect (sins forgiven) before the cause actually takes place. God’s Love is over all. God Knew with certainty that He would see to it that Jesus’ sufferings and death (AND RESURRECTION! Let’s not forget that!) took place … and God chose to apply the effects of that from the beginning of creation. Remember, God is not limited by space or time.

So in other words, sins were being forgiven on the basis of the future sacrifice?

How did the people that did not know about Calvary understand their forgiveness by Jesus if the cross hadn’t happened yet?

Thanks

You do not have to understand it all for it to happen.

God loves us and is not bound by our knowledge.

Greetings herbalt –
You asked, “So in other words, sins were being forgiven on the basis of the future sacrifice?” Exactly. Okay?

You also asked, “How did the people that did not know about Calvary understand their forgiveness by Jesus if the cross hadn’t happened yet?” Of course, they were not aware of Jesus. But if their hearts were God-fearing and they were truly sorry for their sins, God did forgive their sins BECAUSE of the future sacrifice and merits of Jesus. The psalms make clear many time that God Loves ALL of us – yes, even the Egyptian soldiers. The Jews were a special people intended by God to be a great light whereby all peoples could be led toward God. God wants Salvation for ALL people from the first human beings.
All Blessing be to you, herbalt.
