Jesus and his killers

Hi, just following from a recent thread about forgiveness.

I notice Jesus did not specifically forgive his killers; rather, he asked his Father to forgive them.

Is anything to be ‘read into’ this, or am I just being pedantic?

I thought that was Jesus submitting to the authority His father in heaven. I thought that was Jesus showing humility.

I have always wondered about the words Jesus added at the end “for they know not what they do.” It always seemed like a back-handed slight. I think his killers knew exactly what they were doing. Does anyone know why Jesus added those words? Couldn’t he have just said “forgive them father” and left it at that. Didn’t Jesus teach us that we have to forgive no matter what the reason? And here Jesus was giving a reason for forgiveness. It always seemed weird to me.

Jesus died for me and you and for everyone else, so me and you are them.

I have always believed that when Jesus said ’ Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." He was asking that they be forgiven, yes for Crucifying Him, but the words 'they know not what they do 'meant that they did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah…In actuality it was Jesus also forgiving them He told us ’ I and my Father are one and the same…" Jesus loved us so much that He submitted to everything that was done to Him…God Bless all.
