Thanks. I didn’t make myself clear. I understand what you say, but what I wonder is whether a Jew from that time (with greater reason today) would accept that those 4 women really are in the genealogy of Jesus–I mean: why couldn’t that genealogy have been put together precisely to meet the needs of the Christian community?

God bless,
L.

I’m sorry, I didn’t make myself clear.

Because all the women are found in the OT Scriptures. Tamar is the daughter in law of Judah, son of Jacob. Ruth is the wife of Boaz and the great grandmother of David. Bathsheba and David had Solomon outside of marriage (well, they conceived him outside of marriage). Rahab was the (assumed) “Lady of the Evening” who allowed the Jewish spies to hide out in Jericho in return for the safety of her household.

These women are all documented in the Jewish Scriptures, so the Jew could not dispute their inclusion into Jesus’ lineage. The ONLY dispute a Jew would have would be the last handful of people, for nowhere are they documented in Jewish tradition. The line of David was thought to have died out.

That’s why the phrase “a shoot from the stump of David” applies to Jesus. The stump implies that the family tree was cut down. But a “shoot” sprung out of the stump to continue the Davidic line.

Thanks, NotWorthy. Very interesting and thought-provoking.

God bless,
