- I was reading parts of Acts last night and I came across the verses where Jesus is referred to as God’s servant. I have to admit I’m still not comfortable with reading those verses, because I tend to think: what if the apostles thought that Jesus was merely a servant of God, although still mankind’s saviour. Any way, in regards to the following verses:
23 And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who by the mouth of Your servant David** have said:
Code:‘ Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things? 26 The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the LORD and against His Christ.’[c]
27 “For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done.** 29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”
31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. www.biblegateway.com
As you can see, Peter and John were released from the Sanhedrin after they were arrested after teaching the people about the “doctrine of the resurrection”. Then they go to the community and pray.
Let’s assume that the apostles were referring to Jesus being the mysterious suffering Servant of Isaiah (Acts 3:13) and the prophet who was destined to arrive after Moses (Acts 7:37) to explain to the Jews that Jesus is the fufillment of the prophecies of old. Now this is what I don’t understand. Why is it when Peter, John and the community (presumably all believers of Jesus) pray, they still refer to Jesus as God’s holy Servant? Do you know what I mean?
It is one thing to preach that Jesus is the Servant to others who don’t know or didn’t belive Jesus. But now, John and Peter all already know that Jesus is the Christ and the Annointed One, and presumably God the Son, but they still refer to Him as “Servant”.
Code:Btw I also what to point out that several times in the D-R bible and KJB, the word "child" is used instead of "servant". Which is the right translation, because I understand that in the Greek(?), child and servant share the same word?
