This was originally asked by John Paul it never got answered:

Why doesnt the Catholic Church know the exact date of Jesus?

Why didnt the Apostles know Jesus birthday?

Did the Jews of those days not celebrate their birthdays?

How can the Church say that Jesus was born if they do not know his exact birthdate, isnt this an important date?

I do not know your birthdate, but I see evidence that you were born.

jews didn’t celebrate birthdays then-It was a pagan custom then.so they didn’t want anything to do with it.

Pagan? Says who? Of course Jews attached great importance to the birth of a child and all the attendant ceremonial - the circumcision eight days afterward for males and the like. Just because their birthdates aren’t recorded doesn’t mean they weren’t known or celebrated.

It’s only been within the last few centuries that births have been routinely officially recorded and registered - but certainly everyone knew and celebrated their birthdays long before that!

And very importantly, the Catholic Church doesn’t claim to know for indisputable fact that Jesus was born on December 25, it simply chooses that day to commemorate or celebrate the FEAST of His Nativity. Which is so much more than just a birthday, it celebrates all that His birth (which undoubtedly actually took place) represents - God becoming Man, our Saviour coming into the world, Heaven touching earth in a unique way and so on.

I saw really fascinating show on EWTN about the Star of Bethlehem. It used scripture, astronomy and mathmatics to explain the star and other things. Very interesting. It also
showed how the nativity mostly likely was Dec. 25th…here is the website:

But you really need to see the presentation to appreciate it.

To be clear, the project offers proof that the magi actually do visit Jesus on Dec 25th. However, the moderator makes a point of saying that Jesus is a toddler at that point.

However, using Astronomy and Revelations, he does establish the Conception of Christ and establishes the Star of Bethlehem as showing up nine months later. You need to see the entire presentation to appreciate and understand how astounding this show is.

It also establishes the exact date of Jesus’ death. April 3, 33 A.D.

Do you mean this was asked by Pope John Paul II ? I sure hope not.

You meant to ask why the Catholic Church does not know the exact date of Jesus’ birth? Not the date of Jesus. Who, is uncreated.

Why should this have been recorded in scripture? Or, on the other hand is there some ominous message we should infer from it not being recorded?

It’s true that pagans loved to celebrate life. It’s also true that catholics celebrate life as well. Not everything pagans did, or were was a problem with God.

Celebrating life, can’t be a bad thing. And, if you believe your life is going to be an eternity in heaven with God because of what Jesus did for you I can’t imagine it being wrong to set aside one day for recognizing the miracle of his birth.

It’s not the day that seems to matter when you celebrate something. It’s the fact you are together with people you love, sharing a moment. You could celebrate his birth everyday, or any day. There just happens to be one season devoted to his incarnation. And one day for his birth. It’s not like it’s going overboard considering without that, you would not have a single hope of an afterlife as a christian.

Why didn’t the ancient Jews have big festivals for Abraham’s birthday?

Why didn’t they celebrate Moses’s birthday?

Why didn’t they have a party for King David’s birthday anually even after he died?

I heard on the radio that ancient Jews did not celebrate birthdays anually.

Or it was not a widespread practice.

The Roman’s and the Egyptian Pharohs did celebrate birthdays anually.
As well as those who took Roman practices like Herod in the Holy Bible.

It took a very long time and a lot of Christian martyr’s blood to convert the Roman empire to Christianity. The exact date of Jesus’s birth maybe lost in time, but I’m not an expert on Catholicism, I don’t know if they have the date or not.

After the Roman empire became Christian, new Roman converts kept their practice of celebrating birthdays and picked an appropriate day to celebrate the birthday of The Lord Jesus Christ.

So if all the records are lost, or destroyed in a flood or fire, or the records crumble into dust from old age, and nobody remembered the right date…
then you can’t say somebody was born?

If all the records for George Washington, Araham Lincoln, King Henry VII of England and Napoleon Bonaparte of France were lost or destroyed and nobody remembered the right date…
then you can’t say those people were born?

We have the writings and testimonies of the witnesses to these people, even if the records for the specific people are lost or destroyed.

Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich states, based on private revelations from God, that Jesus was born early on the day of November 25th.

In those days, most persons were illiterate or barely literate, and written calenders were not widely used.

When St. Joan of Arc was questioned at her trial, she did not know the year of her own birth, or exactly how old she was. The modern concern with time and dates and precision is relatively new in human history.

There is some evidence that the Jews counted a person’s age by the number of times the Passover was celebrated since the birth of that person. So Luke says that Jesus was 12 (not about 12) at the time of a particular Passover.

I think there is a passage in the bible about people having the ability to have “special days:” and I think it is in either Romans or Hebrews. I forget now.

I am sure someone here knows that scripture.

What God does not prohibit, is not up to man to decide is wrong simply because there is a lack of precedence for it.

Where does God prohibit the practice of celebrating a birth?

I don’t see it.
