Has anyone watched the documentary called Jesus Camp? I am curious to get other people’s thoughts about it!
Since you haven’t seen the movie, I urge you to give it a try. It is an “unbiased view” (meaning it doesn’t lean towards being against or for the way these people raise their children). I was actually deeply disturbed by the way the children were being brought up. One of the boys, Levi, is a young boy with preaching aspirations. He is homeschooled by his mother and is taught only the creationist point of view. All of the children are taught from an early age that in order to feel the Holy Spirit they must speak in tongues. The children sobbed and cried into the mircophone during some type of sermon for a better country. This type of emotional uproar is unfair to their mental well-being. A child can be thirsty for God without being emotionally drained! The script is blasphemous and the characters seem corny. This movie, in all likelihood, is a waste of time and money.

I find it inappropriate that children were instructed to protest abortion outside the White House with tape on their mouths. I also find this act manipulative - to those observing the protest and towards the children. The children aren’t allowed a voice and are told what to believe.
I think showing children images of unborn babies and discussing the issue with them is also inappropriate. LET THEM BE CHILDREN. Why do we have to bombard them with the issues of the world at such a young age? Let them grow peacefully into adults and make appropriate choices on their own. Chances are, if you’re raising them right, they’ll grow up with strong morals. If they want to protest as adults, that is their right.
I also noticed a level of intolerance for other religions or beliefs among both the adults and the children receiving the education. This just lead me to believe that the Evangelical groups in the documentary had an underlying agenda to gain some sort of political power (not sure if this is the case, but it sure felt like it!).
I am not sure if I would call it abuse, but homeschooling a child and only teaching them creationism seems wrong, instead of explaining other views and preparing them for the world. teaching intolerance wont end well either. They can parrot what they have been told but if they ever get a job in the real world or have to interact with people who are very different from them, they will not be able to actually argue and debate their beliefs. I imagine it would mess with their head being encountered with logic and reason and not having the tools to use the same. I have met young adults who really struggled with that transition.
