So… once again, I heard something odd…

While this was from Robert Furrow, it is a common theme amongst many it seems…

He says that as he grew in Christ, he no longer needed a teacher, but knew that Jesus himself was showing him the way in his understanding…

Is this really a prevalent Protestant teaching that if you do it right, Jesus will become your personal Tutor?

Isn’t this actually a sign of arrogance?

Ah…what’s that quote? Something to the effect of: “The man who worships the god he hears inside of himself is in great danger of worshiping himself”.

Unless you are experiencing a true theophany (which I’m gonna go out on a limb and say is extremely rare) then how do you know that voice teaching you is not simply your own?

It’s precisely because Jesus teaches people directly that there are thousands of Protestant sects that disagree with each other.

St. Paul had something to say about this attitude:

1 Corinthians 14:36
What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

Yes an no. John does tell us that we will need no one to teach us, because the Annointed One will each us all we need to know.
I think the arrogant part comes in refusing to accept the authority He appointed to shepherd us.

There have been times when I have “received” an insight. But I always test it against what the Church has taught through the ages. Often, it is found to be correct and I know it must have been the Holy Spirit that led me to the knowledge.

Sometimes though, what I have “learned” has missed the mark by a whisker or two. It is in searching for what the Church teaches that I have increased my understanding.

I just spent a day with some Christian businessmen. Most of them have stopped “going to church”, mostly because their interpretation of Scripture has differed from whichever denomination they attended. Now they have Bible Study and Prayer at home instead.

Yet, what did Jesus pray? John 17:11 “… Holy Father, keep them in thy name whom thou has given me; that they may be one, as we also are.”

He also said, “By their fruits you shall know them.”

The new Protestants protest against the teachings of previous Protestants and so also deserve the name.
