Has anybody ever thought about the strong connections between Superman and Jesus?

-Superman descended upon earth from another world by the will of his father.
-Was his father’s only son
-He became a symbol of hope and a protector of mankind
-Super natural powers
-Self sacrificing
-Morally righteous

Also check out this quote Superman’s father said to him…

“Even though you’ve been raised as a human being you are not one of them…They can be a great people Kal-El; they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you, my only son.”

The major difference.

This is great, reminded me of a time about 20 years ago when I taught ‘CCD’ for 7th graders. At the time, one of the movies (probably 3) was popular and I had mentioned to the class that Jesus could be likened to Superman in certain ways.

I remember getting some serious flaq from the parents over that one.

I thought it was OK to draw on the similarities, thanks for the observation.

Yes, Superman is very similar to Jesus, however this is not uncommon, even if the sheer number of similarities is uncommon. It is called a “Christ allegory,” and is frequently used in literature to make the character have a more central role or be more heroic, morally positive, etc. Look at Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and almost any good vs evil plotline and you will find a ton of these similarities.

Yeah, Superman is a Messianic Archetype character (in most of his incarnations, anyway :p).

Personally I don’t really like Superman, so I wouldn’t use that comparison. There’s definitely something to it, though. 👍

I wonder if Stephen Schwartz had that in mind when he wrote Godspell?

I do not like comparing every single hero story to Jesus. Jesus is human yes but He is perfect, powerful and most importantly God. There is not a single super hero in the DC universe that can’t die and stay dead.

Also keep in mind that every time you say the name of Jesus every knee in heaven and hell must bend at the mere utterance.

Superman or Kal El is an extra terrestrial alien who was lucky enough to be sent to a planet that still had a yellow sun which thanks to his genetics makes him really really powerful.
If he leaves our little solar system for any reason or comes into contact with light from a red star or near equivalent he becomes mortal and can die from tripping down the stairs.

The whole point of comic book heroes is not to be like them but to learn from their stories by extensional medifore and to star into our own internal struggles.

We can be inspired by them but we are not supposed to be like them like we are with Jesus.

There’s a huge difference between a mirror and staircase. Superman is a mirror, Jesus is the staircase of improvement we need to live by and clime ever upward.

Oh sorry. The title of my thread can be a bit misleading. I wasn’t equalizing our Lord Jesus Christ to Superman. I just happened to notice the similarities and was wondering if anyone else has noticed as well.
