My brother-in-law went to jail for several years. Before he went to jail he was, what I call non practicing Catholic (cradle Catholic); he never really went to church. He is now a Born Again Christian. I am happy he found GOD in his life, the issue is that his views about Catholics has changed for the worse. He read a book titled “Change Your Life Biblically” (Volumes 1, 2 & 3). I was curious about this so I borrowed the book. I was shocked at what I read. The books starts out by talking about God, and how the holy day is Saturday and not Sunday. Towards the middle of the book begins the Catholic bashing. It says that the Catholics changed the holy day from Saturday to Sunday. It also goes into detail about how the Catholics teach paganism and how the Pope is consigning men and women to eternal death through his false teachings. I never knew people really felt this way about us. I am not against any religion, but I cautioned anyone if they go to their church and instead of hearing God’s word, you hear accusations and damnation about a religion.

The book is from the Jesus Christ Prison Ministry and I noticed that it slowly lures you in. My question is, how can this be handled? My sister is a Catholic and he is trying to convert her. The problem I see is that, there is no church for them, no place of worship; he just wants to read the bible and teach them. This is not a bad thing, but I still think its good to go out and be around other people who believe in God. Also I am suppose to baptize their son, my nephew, but don’t know if they are going to do allow this after all.

How should this all be handled? I honestly feel like he is being con into hearing this hatred. I feel like he was vulnerable in prison and he was lured in…

First, I would ask him if he is open to hearing the voice of Jesus. If he says yes then simply ask him to read some responses by the Church to his current views. Stress you are not trying to convert him but trying to get him to see if maybe there is another explaination to his current views and what he is reading. Tell him that what he is reading right now is an obviously biased source and it’s purpose is to paint the Church in a negative light. Ask him to read the rebuttals to the argument and once he has all the information at hand to make a deciscion. Tell him you love him and care for him and this is the reason why you would like him to explore why the Church does what it does and teaches what it does as it is apparent he doesn’t know what the Church actually teaches. Then it is up to God giving him the Grace to recognize the truth the best he can.

Bottom line. Don’t give up on him. You will also need to continue to Catechise yourself and be ready to explain the faith the best you can to him and your nephews mother what the true church teaches. It might be smart to get him Karl Keatings Catholicism and Fundamentalism as a basis for reading, although what he is currently reading sounds like a Seven Day Adventis book.

You can find lots of discussion on various topics on this website. Scroll to the top of the page and click on the catholic.com box. Then search various topics in the search engine. YOu can print out the various tracts and mail them to him.

The best way to show your concern for him is to visit him often and contact him often. Write him a letter every week if you can. Show him that you are going to be there to support him in his difficult time.

Also, live your Catholic faith. If you do that you will provide the best example of the Truth of Catholicism.

Hope this helps and good luck.
