I loved this movie! But what I want to know is would you let your children watch this? Or listen to the sound track? I have the sound track too and I play it all the time, the songs are catchy.

I like it, also. I would let my kids watch it.

Peace

My parents took me to the origional JCS stage production. I took my wife to the 25th anniversary (no kids at that time). My children have been watching the movie since they were about 6.

It was the biggest thing at my dorm, next to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. When all the burn-outs came back from the parties, they’d sit back and watch this.

I love the music…

“Jesus Christ, Superstar, hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm are”

My favorite song from the movie is “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”. The song Mary Magdalyn sings to Jesus. It is such a beautiful and moving song.

I watched the complete movie last year for the first time. It was great! Music was great too when I actually listened to the words.

I might let the kids watch the movie but I’m afraid they would fall asleep or leave the room. Musicals just aren’t popular like that anymore. Maybee Phantom Of The Opera will change that?

I’d rather watch Ashlee Simpson’s Orange Bowl peformance over and over again then this movie.

ME TOO! 😃

I would have to be there with the children while they were watching the movie to point out the “biblical” errors that fill the movie and the music. I remember when this movie came out just post Vatican II. The church I was attending used to use the music from the movie during the Saturday evening “Folk Mass”.😦 I can still remember hearing the main theme of the movie being sung as the priest entered the church.

Though I do enjoy listening to some of the music, I think the movie / soundtrack may be a bit problematic for those who may be a bit weak in their faith and are easily swayed by the media.

Just an opinion.

In His peace !

I loved the 1970s version of JCSS when I was younger, but then I saw the 2000 version and fell in love with the new interpretation (which I think is theologically superior, although certainly not perfect). That is the version I own. I took my son to see it (with the new staging) last Lent when it was touring. We had great seats – so close that we got spat on when Judas was singing his first song and Jesus was singing Gesthemane!

My son was 13 and very, very well catechized – understood the conflict with the lyrics during the Last Supper (“for all you care, this bread could be my body…”)

I haven’t watched the new version of Jesus Christ Superstar yet. I’m just stuck with all the hippies in their bell-bottoms singing and dancing in the ruins of ancient Israel. My college friend cried durring the scourging scene, I can only imagine how she was while watching The Passion of The Christ.

I saw the off-Broadway production at the Chicago Lyric Opera House in 1972. It was tastefully done and I’d let my kids see it.

Hey! Wait a minute! I wore bell-bottoms (they were de rigeur when I was in the Navy) and stripped jeans as well. I also wore platform shoes. OH MY! Never had long hair (wouldn’t want to cross the parents). Did grow a beard for the bicentennial and have kept it since.😃

It wasn’t meant to be a dis. 😉 That’s why I like the movie so much. I said hippies because of the drugs in the movie. (The temple market place). Maybe I was being judgemental.

Didn’t do drugs although they were all around me. Everyone has this image of the 70’s that doesn’t reflect the realities. It is often forgotten that there were a whole bunch of us who had consciences formed prior to Vatican II. Our story has never been told. There are certainly others like me. First, I was raised Irish Catholic. Second, I would never do anything to dismay (boy that word doesn’t even come close to the reality) my mother and father.

Absolutely – wish it had been included in the British or Broadway versions, which other than that song not being included, had the movie sound track beat hands down.

This musical has been done in my area twice in the past maybe 6 yrs and is going to be brought out yet again soon. I’ve decided it does not bring honor to our Lord and all He did and does for us. Since I’m a musician, I hope I won’t be asked to play for it bc I’d feel I was selling out to my Point of View.

I did see the play staged when I was in high school, in the ‘70’s and was moved by the scourging scene, too. What I don’t like is that the way it is written emphasizes Jesus’ humanity and doesn’t bring out His divinity - at all. Pls feel free to disagree - it’s been a while since I’ve listened to the music. I’ve got a piano score around here and will have to dig it out and look at the lyrics. It’s fun music to play all right.

ONTH, for those who are well formed in their faith, viewing the play or the movie might be a point for talking about the way Jesus’ ministry and passion are portrayed.
