I don’t care for it, then again I don’t like musicals and wouldn’t watch it again.

This movie was, like me, a product of the 1970s (although luckily I grew up on the 1980s). The 70s were the absolute worst. From clothing to music to movies to politics it was one of the most terrible decades in the history of mankind. I saw this once on TV, when I was a young lad and was terribly confused. Therefore, I would not allow my child to watch it (if I had any kids–right now I only have a Corolla, a laptop, and a dog, among other things).

You know about Carl Anderson the guy who played judas? he died of leukemia in February 23, 2004. 😦

JCS, next to the Beatles, was my favorite piece of music when I was a teenager! I loved learning that cool phrygian main riff on the guitar, as well as “Everything’s all Right” in 5/4 and that temple song with the cool 7/8 riff.

I was very disturbed recently to find out that Paul Thomas, the guy who played Peter, went on to pursue a huge career in the adult film industry :nope:

Well, I know I ruined the movie for a lot of you guys now!

I loved this movie! But what I want to know is would you let your children watch this? Or listen to the sound track? I have the sound track too and I play it all the time, the songs are catchy.
No, I would not encourage it anymore than I would encourage “Godspell” I loved these movie too, but that’s when I didn’t know any better.😦

That’s pretty much my sentiment too. I used to love these movies, now I don’t like them as much as I did when I was a teen. I still listen to the soundtrack though. Coincidently, I don’t like Lifeteen that much anymore either.

I saw this movie in high scool and was bored. In college I loved it even though I knew that it was anti chrisianizing Jesus. But my faith was well rooted in sound doctorine so I could just enjoy the catchy tunes. (love Hosana, can’t look at Palm Sunday the same) 😉 ) As for my Children, only if we could talk about it and dicuss in light of the Truth.

I love this move and the music. I’ve never understood why some people had problems with it. I have the DVD and CD.

I think JCS did help me to understand two things.
  1. The Jews were expecting Jesus to bring them out of Roman tyranny.
"But add a touch of hate at Rome, you will arise to a greater power. We will win ourselves a home!"
  2. The Pharisees crucified Jesus to preserve their own powerbase.
"For the sake of the nation, this Jesus must die".
I also loved the way Jesus was portrayed in the Garden of Gethsemene. It really showed the humanity in Him that is less obvious in the Bible. "I will drink Your cup of poison. Nail me to Your Cross and break me. Bleed me, beat me. Kill me, take me now - before I change my mind"

As a teen (10 years ago) I was in a local production of Godspell but I have never seen JCS. I think I should probably rent it. The music in Godspell was actually beautiful and we did a couple of the songs at mass when I was in the play. All respectfully and appropriattly done of course. From what I have heard of the JCS soundtrack, I don’t think it would transfer in the same way.

The Priests lie to Judas.
Caiaphas: This isn’t blood money
it’s a…
Annas: a fee
Caiaphas: A fee nothing more…
and Judas says:
On thursday night,
you’ll find him where you want him
out from the crowds
in the garden
Gethsemane…

C’mon, what’s wrong with the following lines:
“Tell me what you think about your friends at the top.
Who’d you think besides yourself’s the pick of the crop?
Budha, was he where its at, is he where you are?
Could Mohammed move a mountain, or what that just P.R.?”

Actually loved those lines. And the ones that followed:

“Did you mean to die like that. Was that a mistake or…
did you know your messy death would be a record-breaker”

And Judas grabbed the modern angst with this lyric
“Jesus!
You’ve started to believe
The things they say of you.
You really do believe
This talk of God is true.
All all the good you’ve done
Will soon get swept away.
You’ve begun to matter more than the things you say.”

I still say I loved it and still do and I am 52 years old. I listen to the soundtrack every Easter season. I really don’t see why people have a problem with it. Could the people who really don’t like it give some specific reasons?
Thanks and God bless!!!

This thread reminds me of a classic “All in the Family” episode:
Having been mistakenly arrested, Archie is in jail with a bunch of hippie protesters, when one of them turns on music from the musical, “Jesus Christ Superstar.” When Archie objects, the hippie says, “Don’t you dig ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’?”, Archie replies, “I was digging Jesus Christ long before you weirdos turned him into a superstar! The Lord wants you to come to him on your knees, not wigglin’ and jigglin’ 'til your parts fall off; just like Engelbert Whats-his-dink!” :rotfl:

As one who was addicted to listening to (and going to see) JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR through my teen years and up until just a few years ago (I’m 45 now), I have to say that even though I still like some of the songs, I have to side with those who don’t like the show as a whole, and the reason is the honor due to Christ as GOD INCARNATE.

If you know the song GETHSEMANE in Superstar, you’ll note that at one point in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus screams at God the Father the following:

"Show me there’s a reason for your wanting me to die!
You’re FAR TOO KEEN on where and how,
but not so hot on WHY !! "

To portray Christ speaking to the Father like this is tantamount to blasphemy, yet Superstar portrays him doing just that.

That is really the problem with the show for me. At certain points it is outrageously sacrilegious.

I disagree. He’s just asking “why” - kids ask their parents this all the time. If you read the agony from the gospels you can see that Jesus was really afraid - he was sweating blood. This shows his human side. I don’t think it’s blasphemous at all. And he does, of course, agree to do his Father’s will.

Koda, you’ve got that right. Jesus was fully God and fully man, and I believe that Man was scared out of His wits.

It is stated that when someone is extremely agitated, their capillaries can break. This would explain what happened to Jesus, when he sweated blood. Actually, I feel it was in some ways worse than the actual torture. Jesus’ Divine nature knew full well what was to come, and that Mind would go through much turmoil as it contemplates the tremendous pain the Body was fixing to go through.
