Well, let’s ask. Not I. Let us see if anyone answers in the affirmative or if you are engaging in the fallacy of guilt by association, stereotyping and prejuidice.

2-0 I’m with pnewton.

Jesus Christ Superstar was a great opera of faith which helped lead many people, including myself, to a greater understanding of Christ and his impact on the world. I make a point of listening to the opera every year during Holy Week and it still informs my prayer and meditation of the Lord. No, I’m not a fan of “clown masses,” but I am a huge fan of Jesus Christ Superstar and feel it has been one of the greatest evangelical tools of the modern era.

Come on, think about it. Jesus was a hippe, he had long hair and no job, what more do you want? 😛 To add to the case he went around talking about love and pacifism.

Seriously though, I’m totally joking. :p:D (if this offends you, chalk it up to lack of sleep and poor humor on my part! LOL)
Whitacre_Girl, you rock 😛 This is exactly how I feel! He’s my favourite “hippie” ever 😛

Seriously speaking, though, someone pointed out how amazing the Gethsemani scene was…and I agree. It always gives me chills, it breaks my heart. Such a powerful scene! Just had to “re”-point it out!

You know, I understand how this movie can cause a lot of debate, but I personally really like it. And I actually think it was a veeery smart move…think about it: it’s the 60s, people are losing sense of morality, of right/wrong, etc…and they make a movie, about Jesus, that can easily reach all those hippies that are on the brink of losing their way. Hehe, I know my comment may sound a bit judgemental, but I’ve always thought it was a really smart move. I, myself, was an atheist for a long while…but always really, really liked that movie. It portrays the story of Jesus in a much more accessible way for a lot of people. I think that’s really cool 🙂

no newton Jesus was definitely not a hippie as you pointed out he was a worker, which is does not not fit the model of the classical hippie which is lazy, unbathed (unbaptized hmm), drugged out, and a sinner. Jesus would have more in common with a blue collar workers. I can see him preaching to the hippies trying to save their souls from a life of immorality, but that does not mean he was one of them.

Why, thank you! haha 🙂

The truth is, film is art. What only matter is what YOU get out of it. For some people, its a source of sin, for others it’s a lifepreserver thrown to them in a world where they never would have seen Jesus portrayed positively. Art rarely means exactly the same thing to two people.

So remember this saying: Love God, and do as you will. Does this film cause you to fall deeper in love with Christ? Good! Does it drive you away from him? Then don’t watch it. There is nothing inherently sinful in this movie, although there are inaccuracies to be sure, and the catholic church did not speak out against it as another poster pointed out. I’ll have to take his or her word for that - I wasn’t alive in '73. haha

Well:

As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.

And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

“To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,

“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’

For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.
”

One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.”

“A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Besides, some of us have done worse than hippies. 😉 Remember a certain parable that Jesus said (which incidentally, is the very first parable presented in Godspell!):

He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

I think we’re up to 5-0 now. 😛

Say the black, do the red. But don’t be afraid to sing “What’s the Buzz?” on your own time. 😉

And absolutely keep the clowns in the circus.

I think my favorite character is Caiaphas, as in the most accurately portrayed and having the coolest songs.

Hmmm, so many cool songs… Part of me wants to disagree that he had the coolest songs, but another part admits his were in fact very cool. I think my 2 tops are Getsemeny and Super Star still… Followed by Simon and the Zelots and many others. All the songs were so well done though, I don’t think there’s one I don’t like.

I only have one, Mary Magdalen’s. I always skip that. It’s too sappy for my taste. I also have grown weary of Herod’s, but it’s not too bad. I am with you on the Simon the Zealot part. It is great.

I’ve always liked Judas Iscariot’s opening, “Too much heaven on their minds.”

I do wonder how many people who enjoyed JCS also enjoy clown masses and other changes made with the mass. Maybe they would like the priests to give up their vestments and take up wearing superman shirts and clown shoes as Jesus is depicted in another heretical film.
I do wonder if people have such small minds that they’re unable to make a logical thought without conflating two things which are completely different (I love the word conflation now. And people do it all the time and don’t realize it).

I think that’s 6-0 now.

Sorry to sidetrack, but what are clown masses?
If you feel like being terrified, go to YouTube and search for that term. 😛

I think at some point in the 70’s, someone must have thought it was a good idea to dress up like clowns to make Mass more “fun”. 🤷

Basically, it’s become a rallying point of sorts for many who are frustrated by liturgical abuse. It is symbolic of all that is abhorent about goofy innovations to the liturgy. Frankly, though, I think some over-estimate how much stuff like this still goes on.

That’s…one of the oddest things I’ve ever heard. I thought it was a figure of speech, like a derogatory term someone had come up with for the more liberal masses of the 70’s & 80’s.

Our Catholic high school staged a production of JC Superstar about 8 years ago. I see it as cheeky and a little irreverent, but not blasphemous.

for your viewing pleasure. I wish I was making this stuff up but many parishioners wish to see more of this garbage.

You may not be making this up, but you are being misleading. The first clip is not referenced, other than it is called a “service.” The second clip is referenced and it is from an excommunicated group. So what in the world is your point. Are you just trying to build this gigantic strawman that these clips actual have something to do with the topic, or JSC, or hippies, or anything else except what they are? I think your false associations are totally devoid of any logical connection to this topic or anything else that you think are associated with them.
