Desert Father:
Lets be accurate.I spent my first two years of seminary at New Brunswick Theological, which had a 100 year history of mission to Arabia, so it’s been a center of Christian study on Islam for 116 years now. Islam was my minor and I spent much time in dialog. Jesus is actually said to be the greatest of the prophets, but Muhammad is said to be the “Cap of the Prophets.” The problem is that in his youth, Muhammad spent too much time hanging around Nestorian Monestaries (that’s where he picked up on the Blessid Mother). The Nestorians had odd and herretical views reguarding who Jesus was and were excommunicated from the Church for them . He also hung around Jewish Kabalists, and incorporated teachings from both, as well as pagan, native Arab teachings when he composed his religion for Arabs. That is how both the Jewish histeroreligious writings and the Gospels found their way, in outrageously mutalated form, into Islam. That is of course if indeed he himself actually composed them. They were certainly redacted and extencively editeted by the sultan after Muhammad’s death to legitimatize the sultan’s imperial ambissions.
is this the stuff they really teach you in your seminaries? i’d like to see the sources for these tall tales of hanging around nestorian monks and jewish kabalists. definitely a whole lot of conjecture going on there.

Salaam Brother janG;
The “personal revelation” we are speaking of is God’s grace working in us…the work of the Holy Spirit (and we don’t mean Gabriel.) We’re not talking about an “angel” appearing to us and claiming to give us a message from God.
Yes, I understand what you are saying.

In a way, the holy Qur’an is similarly a “personal revelation” for every Muslim; that is because Allah (SWT) through the Qur’an “talks” to the believer and guides him to the right path. You will find many instances in the Qur’an where Allah (SWT) says “O, you who believe!” As a believer in Allah (SWT), He is speaking to me when I read the Qur’an and He does the same for every single Muslim across the globe and the message is the same for every Muslim from the time of its revelation to today, that is because not a single word was changed in the holy Qur’an and not a single will be changed.

Because of the teachings of the holy Qur’an, Allah (SWT) is always present in the hearts and minds of those who submit to Him. Sincere Muslims do not do anything without calling the name of Allah (SWT) upon it or seeking refuge with Allah (SWT) from it; plus (among other acts of worship) they stand before Allah (SWT) five times a day -at a minimal- in a complete devotion and submission, there is no ultimate state of submission than putting one’s forehead on the ground, I heard (to be verified) that Jesus (PBUH) did that. In Islam there is what is called IHSAN, and IHSAN is “To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is seeing you” , no wonder why Muslims observe their religious duties no matter how some might find them difficult; we find the greatest pleasures in performing them. The submission and remembrance of Allah (SWT) give a sense of peace and security no other thing on earth gives it; Allah (SWT) is most truthful: “Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah: for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction (Qur’an 013.028). May be with the work of Holy Spirit you experience the same thing as above.
What is the Koran? Well, reading it from a Catholic perspective, it sounds like the writings of a man who knew a little bit about Jewish teaching and little bit about heretical Christian teaching
Brother janG,
You don’t start a heresy which impose on your followers to pray obligatory five times a day, to fast from sunrise to sunset during a whole month, to mandatory give up 2.5% of your wealth to the poor and the needy and to observe other religious duties and beside that expect people to follow you, adhere to your teachings and grow in number. People are leaving their “easy” religions on a daily basis to embrace Islam which imposes on them all the above, don’t you find this to be surprising?

The message Allah (SWT) kept sending to His creation since Adam (PBUH) culminated in Islam, the perfected and ultimate religion the Creator set for His creation, it is in Islam that the submission to the Creator is the most perfect.
It sounds like he thought about what he knew and tried to interpret it himself
Brother janG;
If you search the Qur’an you will find tens of commands “say” directed from Allah (SWT) to his servant and messenger Muhammad (PBUH), if you believe that the Qur’an is a composition or “interpretation” of Christian and Jewish scriptures by Muhammad (PBUH), why don’t you straight away say that Muhammad is a liar or an impostor? Muhammad (PBUH) is not any of these, he was the messenger of the One Who sent many prophets before him and as you know we believe Jesus (PBUH) to be one of them.
Unfortunately it misses the big picture of what God had revealed about Himself over the course of human history
Fortunately it corrects the picture not suitable to His majesty human minds and hands has given the Almighty Allah (SWT).

Salaam.
Joseph.
