Jesus predicted the protestants, when he said,

“Why do you call me Lord, Lord but not do what I command? I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words, and acts on them. That one is like a person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock(1); when the flood came, the river burst against that housebut could not shake it(2) because it had been well built. But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation(3). When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed.(4)”
-Luke 6:46-49

1.) the rock (being peter) was the foundation of the Catholic Church.
2.) The river burst against it symbolizes all the attacks from people against it from the protestants, but it was built on Peter, so it prevailed.
3.) The Protestants did not build their churches on Peter so they had no foundation
4.) When attacks came at these churches they were afraid and collapsed.

That means all protestant churches collapsed? I’m confused. Or that they will collapse?

Sorry but these verses implicate people and the foundations they stand upon whether that be Christ, or something else, not churches.

Most of them have collapsed and they keep collapsing everyday. But also everyday new Protestant churches are being established. My guess is that no matter how many protestant churches there are they will always collapse.

Where did you get this from?
From the scripture you posted.
You must consider the context of the verse. In verse 37 and 38,

37 *¶Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

38 *Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

In verse 40 and 41 of Luke chapter 6, Jesus is talking about disciples and their master. Not churches.

39 *And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

40 *The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

Verse 41 and 42 speaks about the beam or the mote that is in thine thine own…or thy brothers eye.
In the parable verse of 43-45, Christ compares good and bad trees to good and evil men.
That’s why He went on to say the following…

46 *And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom **he **is like:

48 *He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

49 *But **he **that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

The foundation of the Church (body of Christ) was first laid with the apostles, true.

To say that the Protestants didn’t build their church on Peter is wrong. It was the same Church up until the reformation. To say that their wasn’t disagreements in it then would be wrong.

Papal infalliabilty did not become dogma until the Council of Trent I believe. However it was brought up many times throughout church history. The point being that those inside the church couldn’t agree on everything too even when it was one Church.

Jesus came in peace. He didn’t come yielding a physical sword. Matt 26:52 all those that take up the sword shall perish by the sword. Jesus even healed the servant of the high priest. A true christian is a peaceful and loving christian.

Point is if you choose to talk about not building a strong foundation, look at what the Catholic church, and some Protestants following the reformation, has done since merging itself with the Roman empire. The blood shed in the name of religion on its behalf doesn’t sound like what Peter, or Jesus, had in mind.

Paul is the perfect example. As a gentile he persecuted the early Church to the point of martydom. ie Stephen (Acts 6-7). As a Christian did he ever take up the sword against his accusers. I don’t think he did. As a matter of fact, he praised Jesus for being counted worthy to suffer persecutions at the hand of the gentiles.

He did not say there was no disagreement in the early church. Its pretty safe to say that the “reformers” built their churches on the opinions and ideas of fallible men like Luther, not Peter.

The church guided by the Holy Spirit had to agree at some point for it to become Dogma

**That does not alter the fact that the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ and given his authority. Built on the foundation of saint Peter the rock, is holder of the fullness of truth and has stood united for 2000 years as was promised by God.

So bottom line

Protestant churches = division and chaos as a result of being founded on the ideas of men

or

Catholic = unbroken historical unity as result of being built on the foundation of Peter the rock**

You know these threads that are posted by Catholics that 'THINK" the Catholic Church is the only Church is really starting to annoy me. You know when I was Catholic I couldnt understand why so many people didnt like the Catholic Church, but now Im learning why. Catholics think they are the only ones assured of Heaven and thats just not true, No one is assured of Heaven until you hear Christ say Well done good and faithful servent. We all strive to serve Christ and love Him just as much as the Catholics do, although they dont think that. Im starting to think the Catholic Church thinks its inferior to any other Church, and that just drives people away.

Those veres the OP posted were not about protestants, thats just their intepretaion of it. I believe it means that any man who doesnt build his foundation on Christ will fall when the storm comes.

I don’t think your right on that one. Maybe some Catholics think they are assured heaven but not all think that way. I believe I’ll make it to heaven(hopefully). But its not because I have the title of being Catholic. I don’t sit on the sofa all day and think “Thank God I’m Catholic or else I might go to hell.” Being Catholic is not my get out hell pass if that’s what your saying. Many Catholics believe, including I, that protestants will go to heaven. As long as they are faithful and don’t keep hate in their hearts they will make it into His Kingdom. Is that why you left the church? Just because you believe that is true means you should just through the faith away?

DrewC Catholics do not hold to an “assurance of salvation” idea, and we especially do not believe we are the only ones who can get to heaven. The church does not teach any such thing. God’s plan of salvation is for all men. Actually the assurance of salvation idea or “Once Saved Always Saved” is a Protestant doctrine that was never taught or even heard of until the 16th century. A Catholic’s assurance of salvation is enduring to the very end, becasue like you said, the battle for heaven is not over until you are in heaven.

Bull! UNAM SANCTAM papal bull by Pope Boniface VIII in 1302 to be specific. Read it for yourself. If the church doesn’t believe this and the pope preached it, then their must be infalliability somewhere.

“Urged by faith, we are obliged to believe and to maintain that the Church is one, holy, catholic, and also apostolic. We believe in her firmly and we confess with simplicity that outside of her there is neither salvation nor the remission of sins, as the Spouse in the Canticles [Sgs 6:8] proclaims: ‘One is my dove, my perfect one. She is the only one, the chosen of her who bore her,’ and she represents one sole mystical body whose Head is Christ and the head of Christ is God [1 Cor 11:3]. In her then is one Lord, one faith, one baptism [Eph 4:5]. There had been at the time of the deluge only one ark of Noah, prefiguring the one Church, which ark, having been finished to a single cubit, had only one pilot and guide, i.e., Noah, and we read that, outside of this ark, all that subsisted on the earth was destroyed.”

This is what the church believes.

Which is it? catholic=unity or there was disagreements in the early church? There was disagreements long before the reformation, ie assumption of Mary and Papal infalliability to name a couple. Assumption of Mary was not accepted as dogma until 1854 by Pope Pius IX. But first introduced in 377 ad in Epiphanius of Salamis. Papal infalliability is even more interesting. It dates back almost as early as the papacy itself. But it wasn’t defined dogmatically until First Vatican Council of 1870, after the reformation. For 300+ years the Catholic church could not agree on it itself.

Now Matthew 10:34. I would think you were a literalist to accept it that way. Jesus did come to bring peace through those that would believe in Him. However He knew obviously that He would be rejected along with his teachings for the world was corrupt. His words were like a sword causing dissention leading people back to God

Christ founded the Church. As a body can have only one head, the head can have only one body. Christ is the head and the Church is the body. Only later did Christians add the “Catholic” before the word church.

Yes you are. And yes all protestant churches are prone to collapse because they are not built on the “rock”.
The catholic church is the one, true church that Christ intended to exist after His ascension into heaven and of which He left Peter as its first Pope…263 popes later to Pope Benedict XVI.

Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.

The Jews are Gods chosen people. How many times were they destroyed or scattered leaving just a remnant? Many!

Why do people fail to remember that the Protestant denominations were part of the same church at one time.

Maybe the Catholic church has stood for so long because it allied itself with governments bent on conquering the world, thus killing off those opposed to the Catholic church. The Catholic church has been a rock from that perspective. The Church allied itself with the Roman empire about 313 ad and up until its collapse shortly after 600 ad. Then it resurged again to become part of the Holy Roman empire from 800 ad to 1806 ad. They it reasserted itself to try to form alliances with Napoleon, Hitler, and various other dictators. Maybe this is why it’s survived.

I know it’s very hard to accept this, but it is true. BTW, Protestants are the ones who think they are going straight to heaven, not the Catholics. Remember we believe in Purgatory also.

Papal, I believe the Jews WERE the chosen people but not anymore…

Another statement based on opinion not fact…Jesus did not say…Peter Feed My Sheep…and make sure you have Popes after you to lead the church and make sure that you teach that there is only one true church!!!

Are you kidding me?? Listen some of you Catholics are not even reading and being educated by your current Bishops and Pope!!!

They don’t even believe this hooey!!

What you are saying is that outside of the Catholic Church everything else is false??? Because if there is only one TRUE Church then that means everything else is FALSE!

What a ridiculous statement…completely the kind of rubbish that was touted in Jesus day and I am completely confident that Jesus did NOT intend to create a new religions.

HE WAS AND IS JEWISH!!! GOD CREATED THE JEWISH PEOPLE!!! Anyone that is NOT a Jew can be a follower now of God…but if you think on the Cross Jesus died to create a NEW CATHOLIC religion you are mad and there is nothing to base that on! Even the readings I have read from the Pope’s recently have lightened their stance on this because they recognize exclusionary statements like this are NOT the kind of thinking or attitude that Christ had! PERIOD!

I read some of these responses and I know there are good and loving Catholics out there that would be appauled and ashamed because it’s the broad statements like these that sound VERY similar to the talk of Pharisees to the DOGS of their times the Samaritans…but JESUS CAME TO SAVE THEM AS WELL! They weren’t even allowed into the Temples of his time! They were considered DOGS! BUT HE died for them just the same and MANY MANY MANY Of them became more devout and loving to our Christ than his own people of the Jewish Faith…remember that God does NOT see a Catholic Stamp on the heads of those that enter Heaven…he said my Sheep will KNOW MY VOICE! They will KNOW HIM…FOLLOW HIM and Obey his commands…I’m sorry salvation is not found in the Catholic Church alone…Jesus never said that…ever.

Papal, I believe the Jews WERE the chosen people but not anymore…
So…just curious when did Jesus say that God no longer recognizes the Jewish people as his Chosen People??? Where in the world do you get that statement from?
