A question that was asked in my 10th grade Rel. Ed. class:
Did Jesus have Marys’ DNA or was He “implanted” whole, as a zygote, with only His DNA?
I believe He had only His own, does anyone know what the Church teaches?

I don’t know that the Church is quite up with the times enough to have made a definitive pronouncement about Jesus’ DNA, or that it’s a particularly pressing question either 😃

My understanding, and forgive me if my limited scientific knowledge leads me astray, is that every person who is not an identical twin has a unique pattern of DNA, but that half would be derived from the mother and half from the father.

Certainly Jesus’ cannot have had Mary’s complete DNA, otherwise he would’ve been a clone of her, including being female :bigyikes:

Assuming he physiologically was a completely normal male (which is what the Church teaches) half of his DNA would be derived from Mary, the other half from a source or sources unknown, but his DNA certainly wouldn’t have been an exact copy of hers.

I’m sure someone will correct me if my science is wrong.

Jesus’ Y Chromosome had to have come from somewhere.

Hence, during the conception of Jesus, God constructed the DNA nucleotide sequence of 23 chromosomes, including the Y chromosome.

So, he had to manifest around 10 nanograms of Nucleotides, polymerize them into a sugar/phosphate backbone in the correct sequence, and then wrap the final DNA in histones and chromatin.

Trouble is, the 2nd law of thermodynamics prohibits spontaneous reactions like that without coupling to a favorable process, not to mention that the 1st law of thermodynamics prohibits that creation or destruction of energy (matter is just tighly packed energy).

Therefore, there must be some measureable change in entropy/energy of the universe from the conception of Jesus.

Ive alwyas wondered what humans could do with DNA from Jesus, say if somehow his real blood was found. Half the DNA there would have been constructed by God himself.

That would make for some awesome gene therapy treatments.

Or it could spring the creation of a “Master Race”, whereby this DNA is introduced into genetically engineered children, hence making them “decendants” of God, and potentially direct in line of successeion to the Papacy.

God created us all. Our DNA was created by the hand of God.

Now he may have done that through natural processes, but those are natural processes he set up.

God is not bound by the natural laws he set up, otherwise how would he work miracles?

The thing is Jesus’ DNA is readily available. There have been several if not many Eucharistic miracles in which the host or wine physically turned into the blood or body of Christ (as in heart tissue).

umm… wow.
So glad Jurassic Park was just a movie! 😃 😃

But Jesus’ status and abilities as God incarnate didn’t come from his DNA - in appearance and physical attributes he was perfectly normal. He felt hunger and thirst, heat and cold, tiredness, suffering and death.

Thus even if he could be ‘cloned’, assuming that the attributes of his spirit/soul couldn’t be, the body so produced should be perfectly normal.

The whole idea that we could physically recreate Jesus would be useless. IF Jesus wanted to He would come back again anytime and however many times He wanted on His own. He simply hasn’t as yet, and no sort of physical cloning would bring Him back on anyone but His own schedule.

Even IF you could create a Jesus clone, it would NOT be the one and ONLY Jesus and even IF it were, He would probably blast you to never never land for trying to play God.

The Church teaches what the Scriptures tell us–that Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit and of Mary. I believe God took Mary’s cells and made the male components from them. So, his DNA was hers, but not exactly like hers since she was a woman and he a man. It’s like Jesus turning the water into wine. All the ingredients for wine are in the natural elements of earth. Jesus used them to create wine. As St. Thomas said, God builds on nature, which he created as good. And as St. Anselm said, “The flesh of Jesus is the flesh of Mary.” And for me that says it all.

If Jesus had half of his DNA from Mary, wouldn’t that make him only half God? That is the confusing part to me. Not that I don’t beleive Jesus is fully God or that he is the son of Mary. However, what I do think is that nothing in our human terms can grasp it. Perhaps this is why Jesus appeared in a time like he did when there was no knowledge of DNA or what consist of a human. Jesus could have been made of anything.

You know, I wouldn’t think too far into all this.

My guess is that if DNA of Jesus was found, it would have half Mary’s and half Joseph’s.

What would you believe then?

First of all, that will never happen but even if it did I woulds think that Jesus was still God and that in his humanly form God gave him the dna like any other individual, half being from a female and half being from a male. However, that would not change anything drastically. Jesus could still be both human in that way and divine. H

The Bible states very clearly that Joseph considered breaking off his engagement with Mary when she became pregnant.

He knew the child wasn’t his, that he hadn’t had relations with her.
If the child COULD have been his the law was clear that in such a situation he would have been obliged to marry her.

It needed the intervention of an angel to convince Joseph that Mary hadn’t been fooling around and that the child didn’t have a human father at all.

This is all quite fruitless speculation, it’s not like we’re ever going to find samples of Mary or Joseph’s DNA to compare to Jesus’ anyway.

It would put a damper on the idea of Mary’s perpetual virginity though, and totally destroy the credibility of the Church which claimed to infallibly proclaim it 😦 though not Christianity as a whole.

Zahmir, I’m curious - how do you reconcile being Catholic with believing that Joseph and Mary had marital relations which produced Jesus? And that the Church has been wrong in beleving she was ever-virgin (or even virgin to begin with!) and ‘infallibly’ proclaiming such - wrongly?

Does this not also mean that the doctrine of infallibility is wrong? And that the Church has in fact erred, is no longer guided by the Holy Spirit and the gates of hell have prevailed against it, since it teaches at least two or three massive errors?

Just asking

Hehehe, when I was little I used to think that the Holy Spirit raped Mary with God’s permission (I was sort of a messed up little kid). This thread made me remember that. If I had to hazard a guess as to what DNA made up Jesus, I’d say half was Mary’s and the other half God made. He’s God after all. Why couldn’t he make one little sperm just for this particular purpose?

Uh, yea, that sounds about right.

Several years ago there was a university radio play about just this. The DNA was implanted in an embyro and a woman became pregnant. While carrying the baby she became conscious of the wrong it was and she distroyed all the DNA samples and then had a miscarriage.

I don’t. I strongly believe in the perpetual virginity of Mary, and will argue to the death on this fact.

I’m just saying, I think it would be God-like humor that the other half of the DNA would be Joseph’s.

Would that ruin Christianity for me? Not at all, because my faith is stronger than what science tells me. Science might tell me that Jesus is actually not present in the Eucharist, because their tests show that the bread is the same before and after transubstantiation. I still believe it.

I’m just saying, “what if?” Would you leave the Church?

How sad if you did.
