After spending some time in prayer to Jesus today, I realized I still have my quirks when going out in the world. Jesus does not change our personality does he? If we spend time in prayer and scripture and try to live a holy life, will Jesus change our personality for the better? In other words, will a Godly life change a nervous person? Will God make a neurotic person calm? Or is that something we as individuals have to try to change on our own?

Jesus reveals who we really are as a person. We find our personality Because Jesus demonstrated with His life what being trully human means. Quirks will go away as the wounds of sin are healed but like St Paul experienced, some quirks may remain for our own good.

Your personality includes such things as being an outgoing person or a shy one.
Being logical or intuitional in your thinking.
Being emotional or reticent when hearing news.

None or better or worse, and growing in faith will not change you from having one personality into another.

YES! He can transform us if we let Him into our hearts and ask His will be done in every aspect of our lives. He may not change you in the ways you ask, but in the ways He and the Father want for you. But my answer is yes, yes, yes, of course Jesus can transform and improve your personality, if it is His will to do so. Otherwise, you may still have these quirks because God intends to use them, perhaps to help others.

I like Benadam’s answer that Jesus revealse who we truly are. We become more who we truly are when we follow Christ, not less.

No, you have got to accept that we have a cretain character, which is a gift of God, with its good and bad connotactions.

Boy, when Jesus will change us, it’s not cosmetics: it will be an atomic bomb, after which you will not recognize you anymore !!!

Hope this metaphor is not too violent…

He uses you as you are. Give him a lemon and he makes lemonade. Of course we grow in virtue and love as we allow him to transform us. We actually change not by thinking about change but by the actions that we do. If we live by his [Christ] teaching then we will know the truth and the truth will set us free.

You are shown the right way to act through prayer and the examples of the saints. In the end, it is up to you to change yourself for the better.

First of all, I’m sure everybody here knows someone who started out shy and “came out of their shell”. This is part of why parents make shy kids take performance-type classes or do confidence-building activities with them.

We certainly know this happens with Christ. It’s one of the oldest Christian stories – the person who becomes “bold”.

Of course, most shy people will always be a bit shy, because God doesn’t always throw His power around and because grace builds on nature. But as a person grows more experienced and wise, a shy person can turn that into a strength of being perceptive and sensitive to others, or of having independence in their thoughts and actions. And God is fully supportive of that.

Then again, it may always be a problem, designed to test you and strengthen you. But you may be able to strengthen other aspects of yourself, so that being shy doesn’t matter so much.

But that’s no shame. Jesus’ wounds didn’t go away when His Body became glorified; they became signs of His glory and love.

So yes, God will change you, but there’s no way to tell how or what He’ll choose to change. The more you work hard to change yourself and improve your character, and the more you strengthen your virtues and conquer or work past your weaknesses, the more He’ll delight to change you. The less you respond and take initiative to do His will, the less you’ll change, barring a miracle or serious trouble and trial.)
