Jesus fast on Sun during Lent?

Hello I am new here. Long time listener of Catholic Answers on SiriusXM.

Question: what did Jesus do on Sundays during his 40 day Fast in the desert? I always assumed he fasted a straight 40 days. Or did he stop his Fast one day of the week like we are supposed too during Lent?

Well, there’s a bit to unpack here.

Our Sunday loosening on the fast is because we are celebrating Christ’s Resurrection.

The fast in the desert is not the same thing as Lent, it may be part of why we celebrate it, but it is not the same thing.
 
Unfortunately, Canon Law had not yet been written, so we may never know what Jesus did on Sundays regarding his fast. I’d be more curious to know if John the Baptist eating locust on a Friday violated requirement for abstinence.
 
Our rules did not apply to them, right? In the first place Sunday was simply the first day of the week. Friday evening was the beginning of the Sabbath. The Gospels say Jesus fasted 40 days and nights. If we take it literally, that would certainly include the first day of the week and probably the Sabbath as well.

We know he eat absolutely no food on Sundays in the desert.

Why is this an issue?

When Lent was first introduced, probably under Pope Sylvester I, it began on Quadragesima Sunday and ended on Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday), giving a duration of exactly forty days. Many years later four extra days were added at the beginning of Lent, from Ash Wednesday to Saturday. The “forty days” refers to the original period, including all six Sundays.
