Jesus forgave sin, but?

I was reading and try to understand the why in the following verse that Jesus did not forgive the sins of those who crucified Him. Instead Jesus ask the Father to forgive them.

(Luk 23:34 DRB) And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. But they, dividing his garments, cast lots.

The gospels are full of Jesus forgiving sins of many people. Anyone have an answer for this?

I think Jesus has forgiven them himself (indicated by his asking for the forgiveness of God the Father) , but he asks God the Father to forgive them because they are harming Christ, His Son, and therefore offending God the Father as well.

He did forgive them- He asked the Father to do the same. It wouldn’t make sense for Jesus to not forgive them, only to ask His Father to do it.

Perhaps it makes sense if you consider the sacrificial aspect of his suffering and death. He is the Lamb of God, the one who is sacrificed. He did not offer the sacrifice to himself, but to the Father.

He made reparation for our sins. He paid the debt that we owe. To whom do we owe this debt? I don’t know. I am inclined to think that it is not a debt owed to the Father per se, but is simply the debt due to justice. Jesus did not pay the debt to himself, but to satisfy justice or, as it is often expressed in Scripture, to justify us.

The gospels are full of Jesus forgiving sins of many people.

Finally let’s examine the Gospel account of God’s forgiveness. Jesus does not say “I have forgiven your sins.” Rather, he says “Your sins are forgiven.” On another occasion, he says that if you forgive others, your heavenly Father will forgive you. This is also in the Lord’s Prayer. When the Pharisees ask “Who but God alone can forgive sins?,” Jesus tells them that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth. This implies that his authority was granted by another, and that must be the Father.
