Why does Jesus’ geneaology go to Joseph, when Joseph is not actually his father? Shouldn’t it go to Mary or her father or mother or something?
Jesus is the Son of David and Joseph is from the royal lineage. He is the decedent of King David. St. Joseph is the lost king when the Babylonians forced marriages and they could not tell who was from which tribe. Why does Jesus’ geneaology go to Joseph, when Joseph is not actually his father? Shouldn’t it go to Mary or her father or mother or something?
This is a common misconception, but is not true. Both the Matthean and Lucan genealogies are through Joseph, and there is nothing in the texts that indicate any reckoning through Mary. There are 2 genealogies in the New Testament, one through Mary and the other through Joseph.
It might well have been the case Mary was from the House of David (we don’t know) but Portos11 is correct in that both Gospels refer to the line of Jesus through Joseph. It was a highly patriarchal society (only the men count). Marriage within the tribe was desired and standard. So by Joseph being from the tribe it is implied his wife and children would be the same.
God waited until Mary was betrothed to Joseph first, so Jesus’ ancestry would be that of the Davidic line. I have heard Jeff Cavins say, or maybe it was Scott Hahn that Mary was from the Levi tribe. Does anyone have any data on this? This is a common misconception, but is not true. Both the Matthean and Lucan genealogies are through Joseph, and there is nothing in the texts that indicate any reckoning through Mary.
Jesus is the heir of the Davidic line according to his paternal ancestry, i.e. through Joseph, who was Jesus’ legal father, and both genealogies attest to this.
Mr. Conte,The promise that the Messiah would be the son of David is fulfilled in two ways:
Ron
- under the Law, since Joseph and Mary were betrothed prior to the Incarnation, Joseph was legally the father of Jesus
- through the flesh, since Mary was also a descendent of the house of David
I could'nt find in the Scripture the lineage from David to Mary.the two genealogies are actually different. Why does Jesus’ geneaology go to Joseph, when Joseph is not actually his father? Shouldn’t it go to Mary or her father or mother or something?
Mary herself even called Joseph Jesus’ father. Why does Jesus’ geneaology go to Joseph, when Joseph is not actually his father? Shouldn’t it go to Mary or her father or mother or something?
biologically jesus is from the line of mary through david’s son nathan, not his son solomon. david’s son, nathan, was named after the prophet nathan. and is the son of bathsheba as was solomon. the political ruling line continued under solomon, while the line of nathan was hidden. but the kingdom split, after solomon passed away, into the northern and southern kingdom. the split was between his son rehoboam and a servant. 10 tribes split away and went or were given to the servant to rule, so they do not have the bloodline of jesus. and are not the line of promise.Mary herself even called Joseph Jesus’ father.
From my understanding, adoptive parents are no less parents than biological ones in the Roman Catholic Church. Anyone can correct me if that has changed.
Again, there is no support for this whatsoever in either text.the two genealogies are actually different.
the differences start from david down to joseph/mary
jesus is actually born from the line of nathan, not solomon.
the line of joseph through solomon is recorded in matthew.
the line through mary is recorded in luke.
it is relevent because jesus’s bodily flesh is from mary’s seed, not joseph’s. mary is the one that counts. joseph is the foster father. he did not contribute any sperm/genetic material to the flesh of jesus. the flesh came from woman, not man. THAT is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, from a genesis book point of view, as well as all the promises god made about his inheritance to all the generations from adam to jesus.Again, there is no support for this whatsoever in either text.
Both genealogies are of Joseph, not Mary, and Jesus’s ancestry is by virtue of his being a son of Joseph. Mary’s ancestry is irrelevant in this case.
St. Joseph was no foster father. He may not have been Jesus’ biological father, but he was in every other sense, his father.it is relevent because jesus’s bodily flesh is from mary’s seed, not joseph’s. mary is the one that counts. joseph is the foster father.
Descent is not based solely on genetics. That’s why it’s not necessary for Mary to be Davidic for all this to be true. Jesus’ Davidic line is through Joseph. He does not need to be Jesus’ biological father for this to be true either.he did not contribute any sperm/genetic material to the flesh of jesus. the flesh came from woman, not man. THAT is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, from a genesis book point of view, as well as all the promises god made about his inheritance to all the generations from adam to jesus.
Again both genealogies are of Joseph. Luke does not present the genealogy of Mary. Nowhere does either text indicate a Marian genalogy.the genealogies are different. i urge you to check them for yourself. the book of luke is from mary’s life, not joseph’s.
it is also important for the understanding of jesus as having two natures and also the issue of the trinity.
And none of these are contradicted even if Mary wasn’t Davidic.it is also important for driving home the point that joseph did not get mary pregnant. and that mary was very special and has a very important role to play in salvation history. that she was born without sin is the most important issue and did not commit sin at any time of her life including the matter of the conception of jesus. it is important to acknowledge that no man contributed any seed/flesh to jesus’ flesh. it is very very very important.
Apparently yes. The Bible says so.Joseph had two fathers?Jacob and Heli?
No it isn’t, and you yourself quote it.** Luke 3** is through Mary
23Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,
the son of Heli,
And it’s precisely that adoption that makes Jesus a descendant of David.Joseph adopted Jesus
