Peace be with you Brothers and sisters.
I was recently told that this scripture proves that Jesus can travel to our past (go back in time) and heal any old wounds. This in itself is a swell thing.

The passage is:

Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Does this passage say that Jesus can go back in time, to my past? Somehow, I cannot see it here.

If you CAN see it, please reply this thread. If not, and if you know of a passage that states it more clearly, please reply as well.

Dominus vobiscum.

The human Jesus can not, I’d say.

The Divine Jesus I am sure could, although not much use in it, as He was “there” since the beginning.

🙂

I agree with Luigi (assuming He means Jesus considered under the aspect of His humanity, vs. the same Person considered under the aspect of His divinity).

So the sentiment is nice, but the logic is incoherent. For starters, what does it even mean to “go back in time”? God does not “experience” time as a succession of moments; rather, all time is present to Him at once. So He does not “go back” or “go forward” in time, but simply is (I AM WHO AM).

Even supposing that “going back in time to heal an old wound” had some sort of meaning, what would we be asking God to do “back then”? God allowed the wound to happen, therefore it is part of His inscrutable will, and not something we should want Him to undo (though we can legitimately want healing).

He who made the deaf to hear and the lame to walk can certainly heal our wounds in the present–why would He need to time travel in order to accomplish this?–though He usually does this over time (with respect to us), and not always completely, or in our lifetime.

Jesus as the Son of God exists outside of time. He goes neither forward nor backwards in time. All of time exists to Him as a single ever-present Now. So no, He can’t, but only because He is not subject to time as we understand it. To say that He was moving either forward or back in time would be to diminish what He is. (In my opinion, at least)

Now, in terms of His human person which was part of Time during His life on Earth, I still don’t think He could. I’m sure he -could- have if he willed it, but I think it would have been contrary to His nature to will it. There would be no need for him to, since all of time would remain accessible to him through His divine nature.

If he could walk through a closed door, ascend into the sky and, for that matter, come alive after being indisputably dead, I don’t think we can conclude that his body somehow limits him now, even physically.

Jesus is not 2 people. He is 1 person. The Holy Trinity is not: The Father, the human Son, the divine Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Trinity is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

here are also misguided professing Christians who believe Mary was the mother only of Jesus the man and should not be called the “Mother of God.” This is the heresy of Nestorianism which was originally spread by Nestorius, a monk of Antioch who became the influential patriarch of Constantinople in 428 AD. Nestorius preached that the man Jesus of Nazareth was not God. He taught that God only dwelt in Jesus as in a temple, that Jesus became God by degrees, and that Jesus was two separate persons within one body. Logically in this interpretation, Nestorius had to deny that Mary is the Mother of God since Nestor believed Jesus was not born divine. He said she should be called Christotokos (Christ bearer), but not Theotokos (God bearer). The doctrine of this heresy was addressed at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. The Church pronounced that Christ is only one person. Therefore, Mary is the mother of that person and since that person is God then Mary is indeed the Theotokos and deserves to be called the “Mother of God.” It was from the ruling of this council that “Holy Mary, Mother of God” was added to the “Hail Mary” prayer, affirming St. Elizabeth’s greeting to the Virgin Mary when, inspired by the Holy Spirit (Lk 1:41), she said “Why should I be honored with a visit from the mother of my Lord?” (Lk 1:43), referring to God by the title “Lord.”

To the OP:

Jesus is God. He is literally omnipotent, all-powerful (He can do anything - anything). This is the official teaching of the Church.

Therefore, if you ask:

“Can Jesus do x, y, or z” - the answer is always yes - it is within His power. Unless you are asking if He can make a rock that is too heavy for Him to lift. That is a strange line of logic, but one that people have posited before. I don’t know the answer to that, though I think the answer might be no because He can lift an infinite amount of weight. Or could He make a 4 sided triangle? Well, I guess not, at least not a 3 dimensional one (that I know of, but I’m probably wrong somehow).

Can He go back in time? Certainly - He made time itself. Can He heal you from your past traumas and cleanse your mind and memory from trauma and sin? Definitely - ask Him to cleanse your mind, your intellect, your will, and all that you are, with His precious Blood.

I know He can do this because He did it for me. He can heal you, yes, He is the Holy Healer. In fact - I believe that He does desire to heal you.

Thank you everyone, for your replies to my thread.

While I have read, carefully, every post and every message, I still await the answer to my original question: does the scripture verse (mentioned in the original post) show that Jesus can “go back in time”? If not, do you know of another?

Dominus vobiscum.

No, it doesn’t, it just says that He is always the same. Scripture shows us that God is never-changing. He will be the same tomorrow as He was 5000 years ago.

Here is one showing He can go back in time and heal wounds:

Mark 10:27
Douay-Rheims Bible
And Jesus looking on them, saith: With men it is impossible; but not with God: for all things are possible with God.

All things are possible with God, including this.

I have to agree that the logic of the question seems largely lost.

God is God .

To use a very poor analogy: It would make even less sense for our Blessed Lord to , um, “go back in time” to heal someone’s wound than it would for an artist to shrink himself down into his painting so he could repair a flaw, when he could much more easily repair it from where he already stands . . . except God is omnipotent - and omnipresent. He already stands everywhere, so to speak.

Not all wounds are self-inflicted either. So let’s bring it down out of the abstract. What if the wound were the direct consequence of someone else’s deliberate act ? Would God go back in time to heal that wound - or would He show himself to be more merciful by preventing that other person from hurting you in the first place - by , um "going back " just a little further in time ? . . . thereby interfering with that other person’s free will ; which in turn would imply that free will is not absolute.

God - as God, can heal any person any time He deems fit. And he doesn’t have to go back in time to do it. God is not only outside of time, God is* beyond* time : He is eternal. God created time, and time is subject to God. And time will cease at the final judgement. The only instance which justified our Blessed Lord subjecting Himself to the limitations of time, was so He could become truly one of us and then redeem us . . .and when He did, His Sacrifice on Calvary rendered the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass timeless. Christ died once, for all.

The question demonstrates an unfortunate incomplete understanding of God’s attributes , because if we really think about it , the only logical explanation for God ever having to, um “go back in time” , would be if He had not forseen something - which would mean He wasn’t really God because He wouldn’t be omniscient; (“He knows all real things in the past, present, and the future by his knowledge of vision.”)

The wisdom of God is without measure. So the question not only suggests that God’s wisdom is limited, but simultaneously that God is not God, and therefore that Jesus is not God.

If God had to go, um “back in time” to heal our wounds, it would imply that He would also have to go, um “back in time” somehow to forgive our sins.

The logic is lost.

:hmmm:

Dear Andrew,
It is unnecessary to go back in time to heal an old wound. It bothers you only because there is yet an open tear on your soul. Our old wounds are healed in the now. You need to find someone who is sensitive to this. Here is a series of programs
youtu.be/up3vlz_SdYI. This will give you some general knowledge.

Thank you everyone, for your answers.

I am greatly blessed for you to have posted your leading from the Lord.

You have not only answered my question, but have taken me beyond.

Dominus vobiscum.

Jesus is completely, simultaneously, present at every instant of humanity’s past, present, and future. That’s an aspect of His Godhood. He doesn’t go backward and forward in time because He doesn’t need to.

Jesus does not need to go back to your past…he was already there even if you weren’t aware of it

As others have stated, God exists outside of time. It is not a matter of time travel and the scripture passage that ''with God all things are possible" better fits with the idea of healing wounds that man with all his intellect cannot heal.
An analogy that I have heard in terms of how God heals is that of a surgeon. When there is trauma in our lives, we develop scar tissue. The scar tissue can be physical, emotional, spiritual, or psychological. A surgeon cuts out what doesn’t belong. God does likewise, even to removing scar tissue that keeps us from living life fully.
Jesus came that we might have life in abundance.
