Also, Christ petitioning the One who could save Him from death seems to me an obvious reference to His plea in the Garden of Gethsemane that if the cup could be taken from Him, that it be made so. He voluntarily submitted Himself to the Will of the Father, which was that remission of sins, and the reconciliation of creation to Himself come about by way of the Crucifixion. I believe “able to save him from death” refers to the idea of taking the cup from Jesus, not that Jesus could not have chosen to abort His mission. However, “yet, not as I will, but as you will”, is Jesus’ resolution to suffer unspeakably for the sake of all.
