“Christ was in the tomb three days and rose as written in the Scriptures”

Some may ask where in the Scriptures this is written?

Well… all over the Old Testament.

Behold:

It was on the third day that God first created life on earth (Gen 1:12); and on the third day the Son of God vouchsafed eternal life to the inhabitants of earth.

It was on the third day of traveling that Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the spot where he was to offer his Only Begotten Son Isaac (Gen 22:4); on the third day after traveling through hades preaching to the souls awaiting him, Christ rose again.

Joseph prophesied that on the third day Pharaoh would restore the servant to his place (Gen 40:13); on the third day, the Father restored Jesus to his place.

It was on the third day that Pharaoh’s chief butler was restored to his butlership (Gen 40:20-21); on the third day the Kings Son was restored to his position of service to man

Josephs brothers would be imprisoned for three days before Joseph instructed them on how to live (Gen 42:17); the sons of Joseph were imprisoned in Sheol, awaiting the time when the Messiah for three days would preach to them the Gospel.

Moses asked the king of Egypt for the Israelites to go on a three day journey to make sacrifice to the Lord their God (Ex 3:18); after his atoning sacrifice, the Lord went on a three day journey to the netherworld.

There was a darkness over all Egypt for three days time (Ex 10:22); there was spiritual darkness over the whole earth the three days the Son of Man was in the earth.

The Israelites traveled for three days with no water before Moses worked the miracle of water flowing from a rock (Ex 15:22); Jesus laid dead with no water or blood flowing in him until the rock of his tomb was removed and his blood flowed once more.

For three days the Israelites purified themselves, and on the third day the LORD came down upon Mt Sinai (Ex 19:11); for three days the Apostles mourned, and on the third day the Lord arose from the tomb.

The flesh of the sacrifice for the peace offering to the LORD had to be consumed fully by the third day (Lev 7:17); after rising on the third day, the flesh of the Lamb of God is perpetually consumed by those seeking Life.

The ark of the covenant traveled for three days with the Israelites (Num 10:33); the Ark of the New Covenant, Mary, kept company with the Apostles mourning her Son.

Any Israelite who had touched a dead body, was unclean unless he purified himself on the third day, and was made clean on the seventh day by virtue of purifying himself on the third day (Num 19:12); Jesus was dead in the tomb until the third day, when he purified Creation, thus fulfilling the seventh day of Creation and inaugurating the Eighth.

The Israelites, after a journey, came into their cities on the third day (Jos 9:17); Jesus, after a journey in death, came back to Jerusalem on the third day.

Joshua gave the Israelites three days to prepare before crossing the Jordan to possess the land the Lord had inherited to them (Jos 1:11); Jesus spent three days in the land of the dead before Resurrecting to the promised land.

The Israelites hid in the mountain for three days to avoid their pursuers (Jos 2:16); Jesus was hid in the tomb three days to overcome sin and death.

King David hid himself “in the ground/field” until the third day (1 Sam 20:5); Jesus, the Son of David, allowed his body to be hid in the ground for three days so as to come forth like a grain of wheat.

Samuel assured Saul that his asses which had been lost three days prior were alive and well (1 Sam 9:20); Jesus assured his disciples that after three days in the tomb, he would emerge alive and well.

The young Egyptian man, after three days with no food or water, had his spirit returned to him (1 Sam 30:12); the man Jesus, after three days dead with no food or water, had his Soul rejoined to His Body by His Divinity so that his Blood would forever flow.

On the third day, a man came out of Sauls camp with his clothes torn and earth upon his head (2 Sam 1:2); Jesus laid in the tomb atop the earth, after having his clothes torn from him.

The king appointed the people to return to him on the third day (1 Kgs 12:12); King Jesus appointed humanity to return to him on the third day.

God told Hezekiah that on the third day he would be healed and go up to the house of the LORD (2 Kgs 20:5); on the third day Jesus was healed and went up to the house of the LORD.

David trusted that three days of being in Gods judgement was better than other punishments (1 Chr 21:12); Jesus, the Son of David, was three days dead by the judgement of God, becoming sin for us though he was sinless.

The Temple of God, after being destroyed, was raised up on the third day of Adar (Ezr 6:15); Jesus’ Body, which is the New Temple, was raised up on the third day after being destroyed.

Judith stayed in the camp for three days (Jud 12:7); Mary, the New Judith, stayed with the Apostles for three days.

Judas Maccabeus and his army marched for three days through the wilderness (1 Mac 5:24); Jesus marched for three days through the wilderness of Hades.

After three days of mourning, fasting, and weeping, Judas commanded his army to stand ready (2 Mac 13:12); after three days of mourning and weeping, the Apostles were comforted by the Risen Lord.

On the third day Queen Esther put on her royal apparel and stood in the kings palace (Est 5:1); on the third day Jesus was clothed with power from on high and was ready to be seated on the Throne in the Eternal Kings Heavenly Palace.

Hosea prophesied that on the third day we would be raised up and live in Gods sight (Hos 6:2); on the third day after his death, Jesus was raised up to live in Gods sight.

Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights (Jon 1:17); Jesus was in the belly of the earth for three days and three nights, then Rose and defeated death by death.

I hope you all get some spiritual benefit from this list I compiled!

This reminds me of a part in an old Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary book I had as a kid, where they made similar lists (not quite as Scripturally-based as yours) showing how the numbers 3 and 7 were special and occurred many times with respect to God, Jesus and Mary. I thought the lists were pretty fascinating as a kid.

Thanks @Tis_Bearself

If people like this sort of thing, I can make more lists like this.

I’m thinking of doing one showing all the ways Mary was prefigured in the Old Testament.

Or another would be all the times the actual names/titles “Jesus” and “Christ” appear in the OT and prefigure Jesus Christ.

“The New Testament lies hidden in the Old, and the Old Testament is revealed in the New; to be ignorant of the Scriptures is to be ignorant of Christ.”

Both of these are good ideas.
Thanks for you good work.

ps
1 Corinthians 15:4
“that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures”

The Nicene Creed:
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.

In the appendix of an unpublished manuscript I list many more resurrection linked third day events see http://www.scripturescholar.com/EmmausBook.pdf on pages 204-206

In the same book linked above talking about what Jesus said on the road to Emmaus about a third of it is on typology of Mary in the Old Testament. She was virgin, appeared barren, held Jesus as He died, remained present at His tomb until He rose (and she was killed), etc.
Let me know what you think.
Grace and peace,
Bruce

Wow, just downloaded the .pdf and skimmed through…

Awesome. I will be reading the whole thing in depth. Thank you very much @Bruce_Killian!

You know three days and three nights was like the default assumed journey time in those days? It has significance beyond just being a 72 hour period.

The Jews reckoned any part of a day or night as a day or night.

Thanks Michael Spyridon for allowing me to place your article on my web site.
In Pope Bendict XVI’s book on Jesus of Nazareth he mentions the peculiarity of this passage in passing, but does not explain it. I appreciate your help in explaining it.
