Hello,

I’m Roman Catholic and my family and I just stay home on Good Friday, pray the rosary at 3 pm, eat one full meal, do not watch tv or listen to radio.

My boyfriend of 2 years is a Baptist, Protestant. He told me just now that Jesus is not dead and that I should be happy and celebrate today.

Any advise?

Good Friday is the feast day of the suffering, which means all of us. A reminder that we too shall have our Good Friday if we have not already. Our society does not believe that suffering has meaning. Jesus on the cross is our affirmation that it does. Elizabeth Taylor had a near death experience while filming Cleopatra. As a senualist, she was totally unprepared for it, and I assume that it was terror that drove her to pursue her affair with Richard Burton to the point where the long-suffering wife of this sot finally sought a divorce.

I would just tell him that you realize Jesus rose again. Explain that we observe Good Friday in memory of His suffering and death, which He endured for our sins. In recognition of such an event, it is appropriate to deny ourselves by fasting to show the sorrow we feel for being, in part, responsible for what He endured.

You can explain that Catholics believe in behaving in accord with the particular feast day so that our emotions correspond to the particular events. At Christmas (the birth of Christ), and Easter (the resurrection of Christ) we rejoice. On Good Friday we repent. Then you can remind him of the following verse:

Ecclesiastes: 3: "All things have their season, and in their times all things pass under heaven. …A time to weep, and a time to laugh. A time to mourn, and a time to dance.

You should be dating a Catholic. If your boyfriend says things like that now, think how hard it would be if you were married with children? Date a Catholic.

Your boyfriend is almost right.

St. John Chrysostom said that we do not mourn and fast because Jesus was crucified. This is a cause for joy, because it brings salvation.

He said we mourn and fast because we are sinners and our sins caused it.

I have Baptist in-laws that think Catholics believe that Jesus is still literally on the cross. I know that makes absolutely no sense at all, but they hold fast to that belief; is this what your boyfriend means?

Apparently his denomination has no concept of anamnesis, of liturgical remembrance of the great events of salvation.

I think this may be a product of OSAS, in that “since I’m saved, I need not look at the sinfulness of my life 'cuz Jesus took all my sins away and I’m forever saved.”

(Note I am attempting to paraphrase the viewpoint of one who believes OSAS; I as a Catholic do not hold OSAS)

The Catholic church does not teach that Jesus is dead, but that he died and rose again.

Inform him that Catholics receive communion on good Friday, which is the living body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ.

That does not preclude us from commemorating his suffering and death.

Happy Easter to everyone!

I’m so happy to receive replies from all of you.

My boyfriend and I had a long discussion abou this and I will tell you my story in another post. I can say that I feel stronger in my beliefs, my faith and to learn more about it.

All the posts thus far are well done. I’d add this: If you were there at Jerusalem as Christ was carrying his cross to Calvary, would you be saying, “Lighten up, Jesus! You’re going to be raised from the dead! Why the long face?” We need to recognize the reality of Christ’s suffering in the Passion before we can embrace the Resurrection. That having been said, we should not let our prayer and meditation stop at the Crucifixion, for without the Resurrection we have no hope.

Also, when asked about why we have Christ on our crosses (instead of a bare cross), Protestants will invariably say, “We have an empty cross because Christ rose”. My response is usually this: “Jesus died at the Cross. He was Resurrected at the tomb. Having Christ on the Cross is entirely appropriate because that’s what happened at the Cross.”

Ask him where the True Baptist Church was hiding for more than 1,900 Good Fridays, and how its enlightened leadership can justify withholding such magnificent truth from so many generations of hapless Christians erroneously worshipping at the foot of the crucifix? What were they waiting for? The invention of television and beltways?

Yeah…date a Catholic.

Seriously. I’m a single Catholic guy (25) in the bible belt that can’t find a Catholic girl to date if my life depended on it, but the BAPTIST guy gets to date the Catholic girl???

Geez alive, talk about unfair.

Catholics and all christians alike have a tendency to forget the gravity of sin. Catholics tend to neglect the confessional and sometimes take a protestant view on confessing their sins “directly to God”.

Protestants don’t like to be reminded of the ugly nature of sin and its consequences with objects like a crucifix preferring the empty or “resurrection” cross.

There may not be much you can tell your boyfriend (and still have a good relationship). Protestants will tell you that they are “saved” or “triumphant”. Everything is automatic including the forgiveness of sins committed now or at the hour of death…“forgiven”. These things are assumed automatically by accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Which is not a bad thing in and of itself…however, they assume too much and without… because they are separate from the one true church that Christ intended to exist after His ascension into heaven and of which He left Peter as its first pope…264 popes later to Pope Bendict XVI. And the gates of hell will not prevail against her.

All true christians came from the Catholic Church… and someday they will all return home.

Does he like Mel Gibson’s movie, The Passion of the Christ? If he does then simply tell him to watch it once a year (during lent season) …then maybe he’ll come around.

Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.

My boyfriend and I talked about it and I just got terribly upset. I cried. I wish I could express myself as well as you guys. I don’t think I deliver the answers to him effectively, because my emotions would always get the best of me. I also feel bad at the same time for my actions towards him and the way I try to initiate the topic of religion, because I don’t want to seem like I’m being forceful (nagging) to start argument or fight between us.

I hear mass every Sunday and there are times that I long for him to be there with me. It’s my dream to someday have a family of my own that goes to church together like I do with my parents. We have also discussed this and he said that was also the case for him. He is the only in his whole family that attends his church. His parents attend to a different one.

Anyway, let me tell you a little bit of his background information. He was actually baptized as roman catholic, but he was never confirmed because his parents (also baptized, confirmed, married as catholics) converted to baptist when he was 4 or 5 years old. My boyfriend also attended a private roman catholic school all throughout grade school and highschool days!! This is a school where students must pass the religion class in order to graduate. He did it all…learned to recite Our Father, Hail Mary and he still knows them to this day!

Sometimes, I think it’s harder for him to revert back to Catholicism (in his case) because he spent years in a catholic school. Yet, he didn’t believe. One thing he said to me was that…yes his parents also came from the catholic church, but they had some questions about the religion and they “found” the answers through the baptist way of teaching. They did something about it and he trust his parents.

I also want to add that when we were talking about religion, he admitted that he is not knowledgeable with the scriptures as he used to be. He hasn’t attended a bible study for a long time. Because of this, he is hesitant to discuss religion with me. I told him that I can find answers to all his questions about catholicism. I even suggested that I can take him to a priest. His questions by the way are your usual common questions you hear from protestants… why pray the rosary, why pray to the saints, why do you put the Pope in a pedestal, why confess your sins…etc.

One thing that you should also know is that I remember him telling me before that there’s not much diffrence between us, just the “traditions”. That’s how he put it. He said that he grows spiritually in his own church because he can talk to his pastor like a friend and not like a priest where people seem to put them on a pedestal and the priest acts like they are higher class of people. He said that he prays directly to God and doesn’t have to go through anybody.

Wow, my post has gotten long already and I feel like there’s more to say. I wonder what you guys think so far. My boyfriend is a really good guy. During our 2 years together, I never felt that he has tried to convert me to be a baptist. He is not vocal as I am. I have actually told him once or twice before to convert back to catholic, but took my words back as I know it has to come from his heart and decide for himself.

Please pray for us.

Yes, He is Risen!!

But, He did die. Without His death, there would have been no Resurrection. Moreover, He died horribly. He was beaten, mocked, scourged, denied and abandoned by those He loved, stripped naked, nailed to a cross and hung up in display for more derision while He died for the very people who were mocking Him. To me, this speaks of the tremendous Love He has for each and every one of us, that He went through this, voluntarily, to save me.

He took our sins upon Himself and went through the Passion for each of us, singly. It behoves us to remember this and commemorate it appropriately, acknowledging, on at least one day of the year, the enormous price Christ paid for each and every one of us.

Hi Mareian,

your boyfriend sounds like a good guy - make sure you hang on to him. 🙂

A few things :

Baptists have tradition too.
His ancestors and probably all of the Baptist’s ancestors at some stage had the traditions of the Catholic Church, before they chose new traditions.
Traditions are important because they are a link to early Christianity.
Jesus is risen - definitely, but we remember especially on Good Friday what Jesus sufferred for us. It helps us to see Jesus as He really is, and why He came.
At the last supper Jesus asked His disciples to ‘do this in memory of me’. In the original Greek the memory is like ‘a memorial’. So we remember Jesus as well because He asked us to.

Please remember that your boyfriend seems like a good son who is simply honouring his parents, who have different views of the Catholic Church than you.

As we grow, we start to see things differently. Give him time to grow too. Be patient and don’t let the disagreements cause problems bewtween you.

Remember that he is right to say that we should celebrate Jesus who is risen, he is right to say that there is very little between you in religion, he is right you have different traditions and he is right to love God and eachother.

I guess one thing to look at is - are the traditions of the Catholic Church valid ?
I think they are.
But there is no rush in you both having to agree on this right now.

Take it easy, pray, be patient and grow and learn the answers together.

Good luck.

Will do. By the way, do check out scripturecatholic.com if you need any “proof” to give him on things. They do a great job of breaking down each of our traditions and showing Biblical evidence for it.
