Jesus is still on the carpet!

The Priest can certainly stop Mass long enough to consume Our Lord. (If he was the one distributing Communion) The Extraordinary minister of the Eucharist had the responsibility to stop and take care of our Lord, if they were there instead. They must consume what is visable, then cover with a cloth and block off so no one steps on the ‘sacred ground’. After Mass they must purify the area in much the same way they purify the chalice.

The priest was distributing on the side I sat on. There was only one EMHC and, on the other side of center. He really did not see it happen. Trust me on that.

I have dropped a host while an EMHC. I picked-up up and immediately consumed it. The legalists said that was self-communion and that I had sinned. Both silly comments.

There was no need to cover the area. There was nothing to purify. Our hosts are tough. The one I dropped in no way chipped or otherwise fractured.

This one did chip apart. There were 2 rather large crumbs left very visably on the carpet. The parish secretary found them without problem based on my telling her where exactly to look.

i’m confused, why would they say it was a sin to consume our Lord. What Saint was it that sneaked back to the Church everyday to receive Our Lord, who had been spilled all over the carpet when Mass was disrupted by soldiers… The day she consumed the last Host, she was caught by the soldiers and killed… Obviously, she risked her life for our Lord… That was self-communion…I dare say it certainly was not a sin!!

I think that happened in China… I read about that saint. She was just a child!

There is a need to cover, and eventually purify the area.

Why? Because Jesus is ON THE FLOOR/ What would you do if you were there 2,000 years ago on Good Friday and Jesus fell in front of you? You would probably help Him up, or do what St. Veronica did and offer Him a rag.

You can’t let a fallen Eucharist go unattended. Wherever Jesus falls is sacred ground.

I am very very certain the priest did not see it happen. He was busy giving Holy Communion to a line of people, and that man was sooo quick picking up the dropped eucharist, I think only four of us saw it. Two ladies on one side of me, and the person behind the man who dropped it.

Now see, that’s the problem nowdays.

Without a communion rail, this can happen and people can get away with it. This would never happen in the days of a communion rail.

notsmart, to say you are not even Christian is a lie! You are so educated in the True Christian religion- Catholicism!

I only wish and pray I can absorb all the rich and beautiful theology and achive a properly grounded moral conscience in full accordance with the church. Otherwise, there is no reason to be here. I am either in, or out. I must pray I will be fully in line with the church, because my child’s life is hanging in the balance.
And, my grandchildren God willing I will be blessed with any.
I am having to make up for many years of hurting my Lord by ignoring him.😦

I will never make any of that up to him. But, he loves me anyway.
I must do my part. I have determined that of all the christian claims, the catholic church is the only one that makes any sense.
This is coming from a real skeptic.

By the way, my husband had a great time with Father! They even had a beer together! He was hesitant to order one, but Father ordered a round for them both!
He is really an approachable man. So serious when he needs to be. (trust me, you should see the reading he makes me do! )
But, he can also live and be fun.😃

How awesome!! Rem though, there is no such thing as absobing it all. It is a constant growth. You’ve accepted it all in saying you know what She teaches is true. It’s a different matter knowing everything taught through the Church. That’s why we’re all here to continue to grow in knowledge and faith.

Sad, so sad. You did rightly. Good for you Pal. I wonder what was going on in the priest’s brain 😦
Sounds like that priest didn’t have much reverence for the Real Presence!

Notsmart, you told the priest that you weren’t a Christian yet… Well, I’m here to tell you that you are in fact a Christian, even if you haven’t been baptized yet, because you believe not only in Jesus, but in the Real Presence. You’re more Catholic than you even realize.

There was no excuse for the priest or deacon to NOT go (or send another appropriate person) to gather up the crumbs of the Eucharist. :nope:

It really saddens me to hear this. God bless you for trying to do the right thing. And please don’t become discouraged. The majority of practicing Catholics (priests and deacons, especially) have profound reverence for the Sacred Body and Blood of Our Lord.

Sorry to go a little off topic here, but:

Shouldn’t the priest have stopped Mass when the wafer fell?

I’ve heard that the priest used to do that, if that certain situation happened. He would then scrub up the spot very well, and put towels on it, basically barricading off the temporarily sacred ground.

Why wouldn’t the priest do this?
Probably an EMHC and not a priest was involved. In either case, many people might not see that well at certain distances. I wear bifocals but probably should have trifocals.

I also see many people receiving the host in their hand(s) and consuming the host as they walk away. In circumstances such as that (along with long lines moving quickly) perhaps it is not as easy to keep control of things as much as years ago.

The lines move faster with people bowing instead of kneeling. So there is less time to focus on the completed consumption of the host by each communicant.

Perhaps some time savings would result if recieving the host was more uniform – always (or nearly always) in the mouth – instead of the minister needing to determine if each communicant wants to receive in the hand or in the mouth.

I saw it because I was in the front row pew. Father gave Holy Communion to my side of the pews. The EMHC were on all other sides of the pews.
I would say less than half recieve by mouth from what I can tell.
I can tell because I can’t go up for communion.

I guess you and I are more expert than many others on this topic. [me too] :o

Pray the Rosary (take a real small step in that direction). I started by just saying the “Our Father” and some “Hail Marys” – almost one decade perhaps. It takes time to learn, but our Mother will watch your every baby step, just like a human mother watches her baby learn to walk.

Take time to explore all the other treasures in the Church that we both are able to participate in. There are many wonderful things available now. And just like Christmas I suppose part of the wonder and excitement is to discover something for yourself. So I resist from giving you too many hints at wonderful things I’ve found. But I think the Rosary is way to big a thing to not tell you about it.

Quit worrying too much and enjoy this time of learning. This time of discovering such things as sacramentals (they tend to help prepare us to receive the sacraments).

I will be a catholic sooner than I thought! Father is on a lesson plan with the husband.
He went to mass at 7:00 tonight.
I went this morning, at the school mass and got to see my child there up front.😃

Awesome! Now perhaps you could join me in prayer that God will work a similar miracle in my unbelieving husband …

Sadly, I too dropped a host once when a woman had to cough and she reflexively pulled in her tongue. The host hit the floor, I immediately retrieved and consumed it. Then I resumed distributing communion. The host in no way shattered or chipped. They are actually baked to be tough. There was nothing to clean up. I agree with the OP, there was nothing to “purify.”
