I’m trying to answer this for someone and am stumped. It says in Mathew that Jesus stayed in Egypt till King Herod died. Yet King Herod beheaded John the Baptist and John the Baptist baptized Jesus. How did John baptize Jesus if he stayed in Egypt till Herod died?

It’s a different Herod. One of the sons. I’m sure others can give more detail.

There are two Herods: Herod the Great who is referenced in Matt 2:15, and Herod Antipas (the son of Herod the Great) who orders John the Baptist’s execution in Matt 14:10.

There are five Herods in the New Testament, all belonging to the same family.

Herod the Great, puppet king of Judea at the time of Jesus’ birth.

Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great and tetrarch of Galilee. He beheaded John the Baptist and interviewed Jesus.

Herod Philip, the husband of Herodias and brother of Antipas.

Herod Agrippa I who beheaded St James and imprisoned St Peter.

Herod Agrippa II who tried St Paul at Caesarea.
