I’m bringing this discussion from another board but I thought it provocative since the recent issues arising from Dan Browns books being turned into movies. Was Jesus Married. If he was would it affect your faith or the churches teachings?

Just so you know I don’t believe he was.

That story is totally fictitious.
And to me, the fact he would be married wouldnt even enter my mind to be honest, its quite insulting to Jesus to even think about it, in my honest opinion.
But you asked a question, and this is just my own opinion.
God bless

I know the book is fictitious. What I want to get at is how would you respond to someone who says it wouldn’t affect their faith in Jesus.

I guess I ask because in the documentary that James Cameron says he found Jesus’ tomb a clergy (not catholic) stated that it wouldn’t affect his faith if they found his bones. Unfortunately, I believe the whole foundation of Christianity would colapse if Jesus did not raise from the dead.

That documentary didnt point out a lot of things, like how common the names of Jesus, Mary and Joseph was in that day, so that tomb could have belonged to a number of families.

And yes, your right, Christianity would certainly face a big challenge IF Jesus was married, but, there is no proof, so im not worried about it at all.

Ok why do you believe that it would cause difficulties (details please)

Marriage and the Resurrection are two different issues.
If Jesus had been married it wouldn’t affect my faith. However, I believe He wasn’t because He was very respectful to women and would not have been likely to leave a wife somewhere or drag her along without making her an important part of His work. Therefore she would have been mentioned many times. Also, He did the most kind, loving thing every time and that would probably not have been to leave children behind with no father. Yet we hear of no provision for children such as He made for Mary.
I would never believe anything that was supposed to be evidence against the Resurrection because there has been so much evidence for it and because we have been warned of deceptions to come in the future. Experts change their minds and are discredited many times per generation and it would be unthinkable to lose my faith over a passing fancy rather than remind myself of all the reasons to believe I have found over the years and that humanity has found over the years when I was specifically warned there would be deceptions coming up.

The Church is the Bride of Christ - not Mary Magdalene or any other single person. End of discussion.
I’m satisfied. I guess some questions aren’t worth asking. Thanks for reminding me of it.

While dying on the cross, Jesus makes provision for the care of His mother. No one else.

Don’t you think that if Jesus had taken a wife, he would have needed to make provision for her care as well? That point alone should be enough.

Some things are conspicuous by their absence.

Jesus was not married.
I am also pretty sure that DiVinci had better things to do in his life than make clues about everything in all his art.

Especially since his name was Leonardo. And since he was so busy with his inventions and other hobbies he hardly got around to painting at all, and when he did it was on commission… and the Mona Lisa wasn’t called that until much later, and it was originally called La Giaconda after its subject, a local merchant’s wife etc.😃 I was sitting around casually poking at the holes in Dan Browns’ work when I first ran into this site. It takes me back.

I do not believe that Jesus was married. However, if he was, it would not affect my faith because Jesus did the will of the Father and if the Father willed Jesus to be married, he would have married.

well, it was almost unheard of in those times to be that age and not married.

But than again, Jesus went against the grain of society his entire life.

I’ve seen the documentary, but I’d rather research with some unbiased sources before I decide.

Jesus knew His Mission. It would have been irresponsible to marry under the circumstances. It is inconceivable that He would have done something irresponsible. Also I agree with Nan, if Jesus had a wife, He would have provided for her care, just as He provided for Mary. He didn’t.

It’s just a story to sell books.

What about John the Baptist and his students? They all were single men.

Dan Brown mostly derives his allegations about Jesus’ marital status from Da Vinci’s famous painting of the Lord’s Supper. Since Da Vinci portrayed “the disciple Jesus loved” as reclining at Jesus’ bosom (closer to Him than the others present) and as a young man with no beard despite his long hair, it was possible and easy for some people that had poor sight or were not familiar with the scene in the New Testament to mistake John for a woman (Mary Magdalene).

(Why Mary Magdalene? : Because of the things claimed about her role among Jesus’ female followers and her relation with Jesus in a Gnostic Gospel).

Dan Brown based his theory on this case of mistaken identity to slander the church and deny Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, which would eventually result in the denial of Jesus’ divinity. Throughout his fiction, Brown followed the erroneous and illogical chain of reasoning below:
  1. Jesus had to be married as a Jewish man of that age.
  2. He married Mary Magdalene and would naturally have children.
  3. He moved to Western Europe with His wife and children.
  4. If it is true that He migrated to Western Europe, it cannot be true that He died. Thus, it is likely that He was not crucified or that He survived crucifixion.
  5. Resurrection cannot be true if Jesus did not die.
  6. New Testament narratives cannot be true because they support resurrection.
  7. The Church deified Jesus by supporting resurrection narratives and denying that He was married.
This is Brown’s backwards logic! 😃

Jesus married the Church in the NT, just as God married Isreal in the OT. It’s the wedding of the Lamb of God. (I think the Catechism has more on this).
