Jesus never laughs?

Sorry juliamagor still not buying it. Remember to stick with the topic of Jesus laughing. I’m not questioning whether or not Jesus asked loaded questions. Jesus laughing is not in the scriptures. Whether He laughed outside of the written word will never know. My guess He did but it was still not a topic of teaching or a teaching moment. You can create all the scenarios you like but for the time beying He didn’t laugh.

Oy vey Scripture doesn’t mentionJesus had human body functions that every human being has. Does that mean Jesus didn’t excrete waste or digest or burp or pass gas?.If it isn’t written in scripture that means it couldn’t have happened? We are not Sola Scriptura.
I’m sure he laughed and smiled-children would never be around anyone who was .Just because scripture doesn’t state it-doesn’t mean that he didn’t .it is rather unimportant , it doesn’t effect one’s faith unless one believes that Jesus acting in a human way takes away from His divinity.
How do you know Jesus never made laughter topic?.Scripture itself tells us that Jesus said and did many other things that would have filled many a book.
Jesus had charisma -he drew people to himself by his actions words and personality.His message of joy would be much less compelling if he hadn’t laughed or smiled.
You can have charisma without a sense of humor- but then you’d be a Hitler type.
Never trust anyone who doesn’t have a sense of humor or gift of laughter. That usually means his hiding something dark within.

As far as finding humor in the Bible I suggest you read the material on the link from a previous post.
Feasting, drinking and being the main guest at a meal usually has includes telling of jokes,laughter and merriment. Having a gift of wit and humor leads to laughter.Why would it be important spiritually that Jesus didn’t laugh like others?

I’ve laughed often, not at someone else’s expense, not even at my own expense, but for joy. It isn’t a bad thing to laugh! Can you imagine He smiled? Laughter can be smiling out loud!

I can tell you with 100% assurance that God laughs. He also cries. Both are very powerful.

It might be really Catholic if we looked at the reasons why Jesus of Nazareth is never shown in the Gospels as smiling or laughing, against the inane suppositions by the confused.

That outstanding apologist Frank Sheed from Australia has taught on soapboxes in Hyde Park, London, and founded the publishing House of Sheed and Ward with his wife, Maisie Ward; has written outstanding books including *Theology and Sanity *and Society and Sanity, but the one I shall quote from here is Christ in Eclipse – A Clinical Study of the Good Christian, 1978, for there is a great need to listen to Christ through this great work.

That very same loving Christ to His own Apostles, “whom He loved to the end” exclaimed: “Have you no sense, no wits, are your hearts dulled, can’t you see, your ears hear, don’t you remember?” (Mk 8:17-18) (Frank Sheed, Christ In Eclipse, Sheed & Ward 1978, p 42). "With individuals He was very much the doctor with a duty not only to tell them what was wrong with them, but to make sure they realized it.” (Ibid. p 40-41).

St John is a good example of the ways of Jesus as the Way, apparently unknown, like much else, to many. John “had met the hard firmness three times: when he and his brother asked for high places in Christ’s kingdom, his ambition was tossed back on him so decisively (Mk 10:35-41); when he wanted fire from heaven to consume a Samaritan city which would not receive Christ, he was rebuked, ‘You do not know what manner of spirit you are, for the Son of man came not to destroy men’s lives but to save them’ (Lk 9:56); when he asked how Peter was to die he was told in effect to mind his own business (Jn 21:22).”

The forgotten reality that is Jesus of Nazareth is given by the great Frank Sheed:
“Certainly, some people who knew Christ in His lifetime would have been startled to find so much made of His loving kindness, indeed might have wondered if you were talking of the same person.”

Frank Sheed points out that Jesus was simply not given to sentimental utterances, and we have just seen how he handled John. Jesus shows plenty of the emotions of anger and grief – at those who accused Him of breaking the Sabbath when he healed (Mk 3:5). We never see Him smile, and His settled habit was terseness of speech. He made it His duty to tell people what was wrong with them, and made sure they realised it.

He refers us to the Gentile woman who “must have felt His ‘Do you want Me to take the bread of the children and give it to dogs?’ as an assertion of her inferiority as a Gentile:…did she feel Him loving?” (Mk 7:25)

So much for the false “acceptance” so often attributed to the Christ who told the woman taken in adultery to “sin no more” as she had breached the sixth commandment – which ensured that she paid more attention to the law. (Jn 8:3-11).

On the multitude however “he had compassion, for they were helpless and harassed like sheep without a shepherd.” (Mt 9:36). So, beware of the wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Many of the issues you have had been dealt with in earlier threads. Jesus burping and passing gas as you crudely stated seem very disrespecting and lacking of taste.

You’re wrong.To you anything the resembles humanity in it’s primal functions somehow is disrespectful. You are trying to separate Him from his humanity in all it’s non-glory.We have a body , it functions not so prettily at times.And so did the Lord’s. That is one of the reasons God came in physical form -with all it’s weakness-so that in his entirely human body he can relate to everything we do , except sin.
His humanity in no way lessens His Godhood. oh How great a savior and God we have who would incarnate in a form lower than the angels. He took on flesh,this weak body,this fragile creature with all it’s shortcomings because even in our grossness physically, spiritually, mentally-He Loves Us-warts and all.He is Lord but He is brother also to us because of His human nature.
Again I ask:
Why would it be important spiritually that Jesus didn’t laugh like others?

Did Jesus ever laugh?

I agree with other posters, that there is no evidence of Him laughing in the Gospels and I believe that He would never have laughed while teaching those serious teachings in the Gospels. However, I do believe that Jesus laughed with His disciples, as friends do, just not at any time while He was teaching, which is what the Gospels record.

Anything that brings laughter to me has the element of surprise that I wasn’t expecting.
Little children are good at this, doing and saying something unexpected.

But Jesus being a divine person could not be surprised at anything since he knew all and could not be surprised by anything.

But smiles can happen quite often because that reflects a certain kind of happiness.

Funny, but when I read some of the gospel verses, even though it doesn’t say Jesus smiled… I see him smiling. Like at the wedding feast at Canna “Mother, what has this to do with me??” I see him with a little smile on his face looking at his mother getting ready to give her a big gift! And at the temple when he was 12 yrs old and Mary asks him, “Son, how could you do this to us?” I see a little grin from a 12 yr old boy saying, “Why did you worry?” Just my take on it…

Or when He said not to throw the children’s food to the dogs, the woman with the sick child came back that the 'little dogs" under the table got the scraps from the childern. He must have had at least a smile on His face! Or in Matt. 7:1-5 about getting the plank out of your own eye before trying to get the splinter out of your neigbor’s eye.

Also, there is the book The Humor of Christ by Elton Trueblood. It’s a older book (from the 1980’s).
