I read on a non-denominational website about the epitaph that Pilate had posted on the cross above Jesus, and in the Hebrew it reads:
**HaYehudim W’Melech HaNazarei Yeshua **
which transliterated from right to left (as it is read in Hebrew) reads
YHWH
We also read in John’s Gospel that the Jews were upset at this:
*,
20 Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read “Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews.”
Now many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
21
So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’”
22
Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23 *
We are so used to seeing crucifixes with the inscription “INRI”, but clearly the Hebrew inscription has more meaning. I don’t know if Pilate did this deliberately, but the Jews certainly must have understood the implication: they had just crucified Yahweh, God!
I would love to hear more comments about this.
