Hello everybody,
Code:
What do you know about the "Jesus only" pentecostals- those who baptize in the name of "Jesus" instead of in the name of the "Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." I know two things about them- they don't believe in the trinity and also that they believe once you recieve the holy ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues that you will live a perfect life. I don't buy either proposition for a second. Why? Read I John 1:8-10 and John 20:23 as well as several passages scattered throughout the letters of Paul. Such a belief seems to lead to either hopelessness if you have a life that doesn't measure up to their standards or arrogance if you do. Either way, it's not a good thing....

I have experience with this group as I used to date a member of this particular organization. Let me start off by stating that their understanding of the Godhead is absoutely heretical as it ignores almost the enitirty of the New Testament which clearly distinguishes the persons of the Blessed Trinity. Second, it ignores Christ’s command to baptize, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Finally, their puritanical view of ethics is contrary to the scriptural model. For them, everything is evil, much like the gnostics. This sect is unchristian and dangerous, as the pastors have great authority over the members of their congregations, to the point of cult like mentality.

Basically, they are Sabellian modalists.

Sabellius was a presbyter of Rome who taught this doctrine in the late 100’s. He was deposed for teaching a novelty no one had ever heard of before.

The big problem is they assume that God is bound by time.

Yes, it is definitely a heresy. I have a friend who is one, and he has told me some real eye-openers!!! :hypno:

jerusha,

Could you please give a few examples of the “eye openers” you were refering to?

Thanks Daniel, I will check those out later.

Love4Mary:
We have in common a dislike for Mormonism, but he is coming to realize that UPC has many characteristics in common with it. He was raised Catholic.

  1. Anti-Catholic
  2. denial of the existence of such a thing as Christian psychology-- all the psychology you need is contained in the Bible
  3. People who were involved in substance abuse in their pre-Christian life can enter situations where alcohol and drugs are available without risk-- because they are “new persons in Christ” If they cannot, it is because of lack of faith
  4. Different understanding of the trinity-- evidenced by their baptismal formula
  5. Obsession with end times
  6. 6000 year creationism
  7. druglike dependency on such features as prayer in tongues
  8. God will take care of me without me taking measures to take care of myself or protect self
  9. anti-intellectualism
  10. Extreme concentration on evangelism
these are just my observations.

Actually, I was briefly involved in something like it a looooong time ago.
