I think that was a typo / mis-spoken sentence. What the Church teaches is that Jesus opened the gates of heaven for us.

Hell was already open.

Maybe its a misconception of the “Harrowing of Hell”, where Jesus broke open the gates of Hades and liberated the Patriarchs and led them to Heaven.
