I have never posted to this particular group before. Last week, I purchased (from a Catholic Goods Catalog) a string of prayer beads, not a western rosary, which somewhat
resembles the mala used by Hindus. A Jerusalem cross is afixed to the circle of
beads to mark where one begins and ends their chanting. The mantra is “Lord Jesus Christ Son of God / Have mercy on me, a sinner.” One inhales during the first half of the mantra, and exhales with the second part. With each repitition, one moves on to the next prayer bead. I find it a very meditative experience. I understand that this style of prayer is Eastern Orthodox in origin. I’m wondering if there are any Easter-rite Catholics here who also pray in this manner?

Thank you

Most Eastern Catholics of the Byzantine tradition (belonging to any one of the sui iuris Churches in communion with Rome) will pray the Jesus Prayer and have a string of beads, or, more commonly, a knotted cord.

BE WARNED - The Jesus Prayer is no more a mantra than is the Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, or any other Western devotional. And the various “physical techniques” (as they are commonly called), such as the breathing methods you mentioned, bows, prostrations, etc., are NOT encouraged unless one has the guidance of an experienced spiritual father who has successfully used these methods. Without proper guidance these methods can and have led to physical, psychological, and spiritual damage.

Out of curiosity, did you buy your beads from Monastery Icons?

ICXC + NIKA,
Phillip
(Master Beadsman)

Sonny, I have a beatiful chotki (prayer rope) with which I pray the Jesus Prayer in the form of the Rule of St. Pachomius.

As a Roman Catholic, I can only describe the Rule of St. Pachomius in terms of what I already know, which is the rosary, and that does not do it justice.

If It insterests you, I’ve put the entire text of the Rule of St. Pachomius into a PDF document available here.

I think looking at the PDF will do more to describe what it is about than I can do with my limited knowledge.

I simply urge you to take the advice of those who are sure to chime in on this thread, particuallary (but not limited to) Phillip and Alex.

For me, the Jesus prayer is a powerful weapon.

I am inviting you and all who are reading this to the Jesus Prayer Group.
We are trying to create a round-the-clock Jesus Prayer Group.
If you feel like it, see your timetable according to the time of ROME, choose a block and send a message to me.

I do not know any Jesus Prayer Beads, if you know where to buy, I am interested.

I am sending an invitation to you.

God Bless You

Why is there a Filioque on the Creed? 😦

😃

The beads in question are quite legitimate (and I believe they are produced by St Meinrad’s Archabbey). They are a string of a hundred beads with the Jerusalem Cross (“Jesus Beads”).

I don’t recall the word “Mantra” ever used in the description that is attached however . . .

In any event, I would recommend our Master Beadsman’s work as the best ever (Phillilp Rolfes).

Please note that I’m recommending him above my own Benedictine monastery to which I’m attached as an oblate.

I don’t know of higher praise than that . . . 🙂

A Latin oversight . . .? 😉

It’s OK - I would love it if as many Latin Catholics as possible would pray the Rule of St Pachomius!

When Eastern Orthodox of the Byzantine tradition adapt certain traditions from the Old Believers, they do the same i.e. they use 3 Lord have mercy’s rather than the Old Believer two and the like.

Breathing techniques should really only be practised by those who are under the care of a spiritual father.

A simple breath out and then in ( for “have mercy on me a sinner”) is fine, but no more than this.

We should say the prayer slowly, of course, with a pause between prayers.

It is also good to make the Sign of the Cross with the Prayer and also to bow and/or make a prostration before a holy image to the floor.

That is a great idea!

As for beads, you should contact Phillip Rolfes for a set of Eastern Jesus Beads - he is the Master Beadsman!

For those who quote the breathing techniques being dangerous, I tell you. If you agree with the explanation you may follow.

We have several functions in the Body. some are involuntarily like digestion, heart beating, and so on. Others are voluntarily like if you raise your hand, if you want to talk you talk, if you want to walk you walk.

Others are mixed: voluntary and involuntary, like eye blinking and breath. Breath may be involuntary and voluntary.

But breath should be involuntary, for the body know very well the amount of oxygen that the body needs. when you sleep you breath without any need of controlling the breath.

The trouble is that your emotional states interfere with breathing, like, anxiety, suffering, intention of strength (pushing a tree trunk) and so on.

When you are anxious your hyperventilate (do you notice it? when your breathing is shallow and fast and you start to feel pain in the top of your chest and you feel like there is no place to go?). Other times you cut your breathing for a long time.

The solution is simple: do not interfere with your breathing. Let the body do the job. let he body be the animal that is.

Moreover, we are born with abdominal breath and ti becomes a chest breath. We should return to the abdominal breath like the pregnant ladies learn as a preparation ti birth and do it while givinge birth.

I am so thankful you posted this. I have had the “breathing techniques” explained to me and read several different ways of how one is supposed to breath and was getting quite confused about it.*

Sorry, I live on feedback which is essential for me.
Would you mind to tell me whether what i said makes sense?
I ask this question many times but never through the net.
Thanks

Please do NOT attempt to teach breathing techniques to use while praying the Jesus Prayer .

As Alex Roman up thread mentioned , these techniques should only be taught by a Spiritual Father who, in practice, has years of spirituality behind him.

For a layman to try and teach others in this way is NOT good .

Why is it so difficult to put into words why it helped me…
If God graces me with the ability to put my scattered thoughts into words I will…

😃
I was hoping you guys wouldn’t notice and would just say it. 😃

Seriously…

Someone posted the rule on another thread and it simply said “Say the Nicene Creed.” They did not post the creed itself. I’m Roman Catholic and so I did what any self-respecting Roman Catholic would do - cut and paste off the interenet. 🤷

I’ve posed it in MS Word (.doc) format if you want to download it and change it to suit your own belief. I really have no idea what any version of the creed should say other than what I am used to in the Roman Catholic Church. Knock yourself out here.

Feel free to correct the one typo. You have to figure out what it is.

Hi Tim:
Thanks for posting the St. Pachomius rule for the Jesus Prayer. This is also used as the beginning of our Orthodox morning prayers and starts the Matins/Orthros each day. Of course, for me there would be one small correction of the Nicene creed…
And one other edit, to the intercession to the Theotokos. You have “Most Holy Theotokos, save us.” But this comes from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, which in Greek is :Ταῖς πρεσβείαις τῆς Θεοτόκου, Σῶτερ, σῶσον ἡμᾶς. That translates to : “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, Lord, save us.” This is more theologically correct, although we all know what we mean, and what His Mother means to Him!
One question: where do we sign up our hour to pray the Jesus Prayer? It is a wonderful idea to pray it for continuous 24 hours; we must have CAF members overseas who can fill in the hours when we are (or should be ) asleep. Is the list over at the Jesus Prayer Group?
Thanks, and God bless us all! bob.c
