No, and it’s possible that such a thread might already exist.

Many editions, or printings, of the KJV identify it as an ‘Authorized Edition’, and I’ve always assumed that that meant that, at one time or another, by one denomination or another, it was specifically authorized for liturgical use.

But such a label would seem rather meaningless outside the purview of the organization giving the authorization.

Thats a heck of a twist. Jesus was speaking to the apostles when he said “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” The word “you” is referring to the men He was speaking to.

I’m not sure exactly what he’s talking about either, but are you implying that the authority to forgive sins ended with the death of the last apostle?

Oh no, of course not. I’m a by-the-book Catholic. LOL.

That guy was giving the usual protestant line, that it is the scriptures that forgive or retain sins, not men. It takes a whole lot of twisting to come up with that interpretation.

No it just takes a good exegetical evaluation in order to find the truth. No man but God can forgive sins. It is incumbent upon preachers to teach the gospel, telling what is necessary for the forgiveness of sins and if one doesn’t submit to the gospel then that sin is not forgiven.

But those are just catch phrases. “Submit to the gospel” how? This is Protestantism to a “T” - every one with his/her own interpretation.

When I confess and hear the words of absolution, there is no doubt that I am forgiven. Of course it is God who forgives, He has given the priest, through his ordination by a bishop whose office goes directly back to the apostles, the authority to impart the absolution or withhold it (which is rare). The penitent is only required to be sincere in seeking forgiveness.

Can and will God forgive sins through prayer? Of course! I make an act of contrition every night at bedtime. But auricular confession avails much, including the priest’s advice and council for avoiding these sins in the future.

Obviously, as in the case of the Eucharist, those who call themselves Christian but have rejected this great gift from the Lord are going to seek to belittle it. Sad.
 
I did not read the entire thread and probably won’t. I came here through a link at another thread and this is very interesting. I got the information in the first few entries.

I do want to thank all of you who take the time and effort to explain Church teaching and Scriptures. I certainly have neither the wisdom/background nor the patience/perseverence to try to enlighten those who either do not understand or who willfully twist what the Church teaches. I look at the discussions and, as I’m sure many of you do, get frustrated by what seems to be a firm determination to deny the truths of the Catholic church. And I do believe that those who do so are well-intentioned, but just plain misled.

It’s the old quote of Bishop Sheen about how few really dislike the Church for what she teaches and how many dislike her for what they mistakenly think she teaches.
