Glory to Jesus Christ!

Hi Cyber 🙂
Hiya Hesychios!

Well for starters there is the “connection” to the ‘Ancient Church.’

Last I checked don’t we, as Catholics believe we ARE the Ancient Church?

I would suggest that the oak and the acorn are the same tree, but that over time the tree sheds one set of qualities for another. That does not invalidate what came before, but confirms it.
Also the fact the Rosary didn’t get revealed / developed until about the medevil period. Add to this I’ve yet to see a single Catholic DEVOTION that didn’t include saying a Hail Mary.
There is a popular myth the the BVM gave St Dominic the rosary in the early 13th century, however it is a well known fact that the rosary developed in late antiquity from the practice of saying 150 ‘Our Fathers’, and that was to allow the less well educated common folk to pray in the spirit of the monastics who would pray 150 Psalms.

The ‘Hail Mary’ devotional prayer evolved a lot itself (the last phrase, or conclusion, had many possible variations and is still different in the east from the western version), not being fixed in the west into it’s final well known form until after Trent.

I have a chaplet of St Patrick (died circa 490AD) which does not include the Hail Mary prayer in any form.

No devotions from the ‘sapling’ stage of the church would include a Hail Mary. That does not invalidate them.

In the eastern church the most popular exclamatory prayer is the Prayer of the Heart, or ‘Jesus Prayer’, it is well attested from the third and fourth centuries, can be prayed with or without beads and does not have a fixed number of repititions. The individual may decide (often in consultation with a spiritual director) how many to say. This is a fully Catholic, not Protestant, practice.

Christ is Risen…Indeed!
Michael

Ahh thanks for the correction Michael…

I’m still trying to find the other things that set my Protestant detector off…

Althought the claims to being an anceint practice making a rapid comeback really did it.

It was like a voice screamed PROTESTANT!
